INDIANA HOSTS MICHIGAN STATE AND IOWA
WHAT'S HAPPENING: The Indiana Hoosiers (5-4) take on Michigan State and Iowa at the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatics Center this Saturday, Jan. 30. Action is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
A LOOK AT MICHIGAN STATE: The Spartans come to Bloomington with a 1-4 overall record and are looking for their first Big Ten win. They won their only dual meet against Western Michigan. Most recently, MSU lost to Purdue by the score of 141-102. Ildiko Szekely leads the team in three events including the 500 and 1000-yard free and the 400-yard IM. Rachel Frumpkin holds the fastest 100 and 200-yard breaststroke times. Frumpkin's times are very close close to Becky Kamberg's fastest times. Diver Kim Zieman has been Michigan State's powerhouse all season.
A LOOK AT IOWA: Iowa holds a 5-4 overall record. The Hawkeyes lost to Minnesota over the weekend 169.5-130.5. Kara Schmitz and Loredana Zisu lead the Hawkeyes. Both provide great strength in the backstroke events for the Hawkeyes. They were finalists at Big Ten last year. Zisu also is the top butterflier.
THE SWIMMING COACHES: Entering her first season as the Indiana head coach is Dorsey Tierney. However, Tierney has Indiana ties dating back to 1994 when she was an assistant coach at IU. After a year with IU, she moved to swimming powerhouse Southern Methodist University. For three years, Tierney helped guide the Mustangs to three top-four finishes at the National Championships. Assistant coach Greg Earhart enters his first season with the Hoosiers. Earhart spent the last two years with the Minnesota Women's Swimming program as an assistant coach.
DIVING COACH JEFF HUBER: Dr. Jeff Huber is in his tenth year at the helm of Indiana Diving. Over his tenure, he has coached 19 divers to All-American honors 50 times. Huber has won Big-Ten Diving Coach-of-the-Year honors three times.
HOOSIERS FALL TO PURDUE: In a very close battle with numerous lead changes, the Hoosiers fell to the Boilermakers in West Lafayette 164-136. Jen Brooks and Jen Cristy led the Hoosiers with two wins a piece. Brooks showed her leadership winning the 100 and 200-yard fly both in season bests. Cristy swam to victory in both sprint free events. In the 50-yard free, Cristy went a :23.67 to touch out Erika Whyte. In the 100 yard free, Cristy swam a :51.85 to steal another race from Whyte.
THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Big Ten Championships are less than one month away. They will be held in Minneapolis, Minn. For credentials or ticket information, please call Becky Bohm at the University of Minnesota at (612) 624-8000.
NEXT UP: The Hoosiers will rest until Feb. 18-20 in preparation for the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis. The preliminary competition begins at 11 a.m., followed by the finals at 7 pm.
