HOOSIERS DEFEAT MICHIGAN STATE; FALL TO IOWA
Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana women's swimming and diving team (6-5) grabbed their first Big Ten victory of the season over the Michigan State Spartans 165-78 today at the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatics Center.
The other dual meet against Iowa came down to the final relay, where the Hawkeyes prevailed defeating Indiana 128-115.
Coach Dorsey Tierney felt good about the team's performance today. "I was mostly pleased with our racing. We were really tough today, the seniors especially."
The Hoosiers started the meet winning the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Helena Wilhelm, Becky Kamberg, Jen Brooks, and Jen Cristy clocked a 3:52.03 to touch out the team from Iowa.
The 200-yard butterfly featured a record breaking performance by Jen Brooks. Brooks finished the race in 2:03.02 replacing Jen Watts time of 2:03.35.
Sophomore Jen Cristy led the team winning two events. Cristy took the 50 yard free victory in :23.24, and the 100-yard free victory in a season best time of :50.81.
In diving, freshman Sara Reiling defeated fellow Hoosier Erin Quinn on three meter by 4.6 points to secure the win. Reiling took second on one-meter, and Quinn finished in fourth.
The Hoosiers do not compete until the Big Ten Championships February 18-20. Prelims start at 11 a.m., followed by the finals at 7 p.m.
Tierney is excited how her team will compete at Big Tens. "I feel good about our chances at Big Tens," Tierney said. "It is going to be a real dogfight for fifth place through eighth. But I think all of our background work will pay off."
