Indiana Novice First at the Rock
The Indian University Women's Crew competed in the 14th annual Head of the Rock Regatta in Rockford, Illinois. The Indiana Team was one of approximately 50 teams including Big Ten Rivals Iowa and Wisconsin. The event attracted crews from Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. In all, the event drew over 1500 athletes and over 400 shells ranging in size from singles to the eight oared shells.
"The women really came here with a great attitude and I could see their focus right from the start," said Coach Mark Wilson of his team. "The Coaching staff really laid into them this week and asked them to step up, which they all did. Every boat did better than last week and that was great to see. I really felt like it was a turning point for the program."
Indian University won the Novice eight race, which was one of the largest events of the day. The Hoosiers beat Iowa and Wisconsin, along with Notre Dame, Marquette, University of Chicago, Northwestern, and about 20 other schools. The Second Novice eight finished with a very strong 9th place and was done with out Lauren Crowe who had been stroking the boat but had sustained an ankle injury a day prior to the race.
The results continued to be positive in the four's as well with the novice team finishing 2nd and 6th. The Varsity lineups improved as well. They finished 9th in the Open eight race.
Next weekend, the team will be traveling to Indianapolis for Eagle Creek on Saturday. This will be the team's third race. Among some of the competitors will be Purdue and other regional teams.
