Women's Rowing Wins in Indianapolis
Saturday was the third official race for the newly formed women's varsity rowing team at Indiana University and was another strong showing by the IU rowers. The team competed in the Head of the Eagle Regatta on Eagle Creek Reservoir. The race took place on Saturday under windy conditions. The team competed against other regional schools highlighted by crews from University of Wisconsin, University of Louisville, and Purdue University. About 700 rowers competed overall.
The Hoosiers continued their winning in the novice events which were demonstrated by a clean sweep in the Novice Four's event. IU event entered four boats in the event of 14 and finished first, second, third and seventh. However, in the Novice eight race Indiana was involved in a series of collisions with Marquette University as the Hoosiers were attempting to pass. Marquette was assessed with a 60-second penalty while IU lost no time in the incident. Indiana finished with a third place out of 21 boats.
"I am very happy with the girls performance today and am only disappointed that we were interfered with," commented Coach Mark Wilson. "It is a flaw in the rules that allows the referee to only add time to a crew who causes a collision but does not allow time to be taken away from the interfered crew."
The Varsity took another positive step and finished a strong third in the open eight in a field of eight.
"The team is taking forward steps every weekend of racing and they are being more focused in practice as well," explained Wilson.
The team is off next weekend and will be spending the next two weeks
preparing for the Head of the Elk Regatta in Elkhart, Indian on Saturday
October 31st. At the Elk, Indiana will see the powers of Michigan, Wisconsin,
Notre Dame and Michigan State.
