CREW COMPETES IN FIRST RACE
Pittsburgh, PA - The Indiana Women's Crew competed in the 13th annual Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday October 2, 1999. This was the first intercollegiate action that the Hoosiers have seen since being elevated to varsity status this fall. The team consisted of thirty-six athletes and three coaches. The team entered two open eight's, two youth eight's two open four's and two youth fours. The race drew over 4,000 athletes from across the country. Teams from Massachusetts, Virginia, Texas, Kansas, Wisconsin, and other Midwestern states competed on the Allegheny River in downtown Pittsburgh.
In the open events, Indiana faced defending national champion Brown University as well as national powerhouses Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, and Virginia.
"I am not entirely happy with the results but I know that the team rowed well. With more conditioning and hard work on and off the water new year will be a completely different story," said Coach Wilson. "We were limited in the athlete's we were able to take because of the NCAA eligibility process and I feel that our team will be stronger as the fall progresses. The girls have a taste of what racing is all about and that will help us become more competitive as the fall season continues. We raced some of the best teams in the country today and we need to remember that they were in our position only a few years ago."
The crew will be off again this weekend to Rockford, IL for the Head of the Rock Regatta on Sunday October 10.
