HOOSIERS FALL TO PURDUE BY EIGHT
Bloomington, Ind.-- So close, and yet, so far. The Indiana Women's swimming and diving team went for its first Big Ten win tonight, but came up short against a deep and talented Purdue team, 154-146.
"Purdue is tough in a dual," said Hoosier head coach Dorsey Tierney. "Given the rivalry, we knew they'd be up for the meet, and we would too. I feel that we raced better tonight than we have all year."
The Hoosiers recorded five season bests, and tied a sixth in tonight's meet. Sophomore Erin Rice returned to the Hoosier squad after recovering from a broken foot. Rice's first meet of the season was an outstanding one for her. Rice won both the mile freestyle (1650 yards) and the 500-yard freestyle. Rice's time of 5:04.17 in the 500 was a season best for the Hoosiers. Her time in the mile (17:07.53) was a half a second away from her lifetime best in the event.
"I'm really not surprised by Erin," said Tierney. "She's been training three times as hard as last year and has been great in practice." Tierney was also pleased with several other performances. "Kristy Martin really stepped up for us. Megan Geers did really well, and Jennifer Watts did great in the 200 fly."
Junior Jenn Cristy was a triple winner for Indiana. Cristy swept the sprint events, and set a new season best for the Hoosiers in the 200 (1:51.53). Cristy took the 50 in 23.60, and the 100 in 52.05.
The Boilermakers won seven of sixteen events, and swept the relays. Last year the Boilers beat IU 164-136. This year the Hoosiers took it down to the wire, as the winner of the final event, the 200 free relay, won the meet. Purdue edged IU by less than five-tenths of a second (1:36.51).
Other winners for IU were: Kristy Martin, 400 IM (4:31.73); Jennifer Sonneborn, one-meter diving; Sara Reiling, three-meter diving; and Amanda Noblet, 200 back (2:06.10).
Indiana is off until the Indiana Invitational on December 3-5.
