ROWING SEASON CONCLUDES AT ELK
The Indiana University Women's Crew finished their inaugural fall season in good company at the Head of the Elk in Elkhart, Indiana on Sunday October 31. The team competed against other universities and clubs from around the region and had another strong showing. The team boated three novice fours, one Varsity four, two novice eight's, two Varsity eight's and a single scull in the competition. IU faced some strong competition from Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Notre Dame among others and faced the challenge well. In the novice races, the new Hoosiers did very well and finished a strong fourth and fifth in their races. The Varsity had a good solid row and finished with a seventh place finish in the eight event but did place a very strong third in the varsity four event. The team has progressed however since moving up from club status. At last years Head of the Elk, the team did not score a single point, this year the team finished fifth in the total points out of about 35 teams.
Coach Wilson was very pleased with the strong showing of the Hoosiers and remarked that the team had "exceeded his expectations" for the fall season. "The whole team got off to a rocky start but has really come together and is looking forward to the spring racing season," commented Wilson. "The team is at a really good level right now with the novice ladies having a good, positive racing season under their belts. They are excited about the next step and know they have more speed to find." The varsity group is also picking up momentum and is more excited about the winter and spring than before."
The team will be undergoing some changes before spring. One of the changes is the loss Stephanie McCallister. Stephanie is a senior who will not be returning to the team due to other responsibilities. "Stephanie is a very strong an positive feature on the team and will be missed by the team and the coaches. She brought an air of maturity and always had a good attitude towards the team and her teammates."
The team will now be focusing on the winter training period and will
continue to hone it's technique and work on getting stronger and fitter
as the winter season progresses towards spring.
