HOOSIERS TO COMPETE AT NORTHERN IOWA OPEN
MEET INFORMATION:The Hoosiers compete at the Northern Iowa Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Saturday December 4. The meet is a non-team scored event.
HEAD COACH DUANE GOLDMAN... is in his eighth season as the head coach and tenth season with the program. He has a career record 77-43-3, and has coached five individuals to to seven All-America honors. Goldman is just the seventh coach in the program's history and ranks fourth all-time in wins with 77.
LAST MEET: Four Hoosiers began their wrestling season at the St. Louis Open at St. Louis Community College Saturday November 20.
IU freshman Coyte Cooper won the freshman/sophomore division at 141 pounds. Cooper marched through the bracket, winning all five matches decisively, including an 18-7 over Mark Natzke of Minnesota State in the championship. Cooper collected two pins and took the other three by at least eight points.
IU senior Pat Cassidy finished second in the 125-pound open division. He won his first three matches before falling 5-2 to Quantres Bates of Oklahoma in the championship. Freshman Ty Matthews also took second, falling 7-5 to Illinois' Nate Patrick in the final match. Matthews advanced through the first three rounds before the loss.
Senior Butch Hildebrand went 4-2 as he placed fourth in the 165-pound open division. He defeated Bill Zieman of Illinois, who is ranked sixth nationally, 9-8 to advance to the placing rounds. Hildebrand then fell in the semifinals before winning his only match in the loser's bracket to advance to the third place match.
IN THE RANKINGS: Three Hoosiers made the InterMat top 20 for their respective weight classes: senior Pat Cassidy is 10th at 125, junior Kevin Stanley is fifth at 157, and sophomore Viktor Sveda is 15th at 197.
KING PIN: Pat Cassidy has 13 career pins and needs just two more to move into a tie for 10th on the IU career list. Cassidy also leads all current Hoosiers in career pins.
MICHAEL BUNDY: went 4-2 with one pin to finish seventh at the Michigan State Open.
PAT CASSIDY: went 3-1 in the open division at the St. Louis Open as he finished second.
COYTE COOPER: went 5-0 with two pins and three wins by at least eight points as he wont the freshman/sophomore division of the St. Louis Open.
BUTCH HILDEBRAND: went 4-2 with one pin and defeated No. 6 Bill Zieman of Illinois as he placed fourth in the St. Louis Open.
TY MATTHEWS: went 3-1, defeating two nationally ranked competitors, on his way to a second place finish at the St. Louis Open.
SEAN PRINCE: went 3-2 with two pins to finish seventh at the Michigan State Open.
