HOOSIERS FALL TO KENTUCKY
Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana Women's Swimming and Diving team swam well, but came up short to the University of Kentucky,
Sophomore Sara Reiling came away a double winner for the Hoosiers today. IU's top diver won both the 1- and 3-meter springboard events. In the process, Reiling broke the Billingsley pool records for 1- and 3-meter diving (six dives). In the 1 meter event, Reiling totalled 304.65, beating Jennifer Dixon's mark of 299.85. Dixon, an Indiana diver, set the mark in 1995. In the 3-meter event, Reiling came out with a 332.02. Her mark bested Hoosier Carrie Keckley's 1995 mark.
"Sara did a great job, but she can dive better," commented diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber. "We did a nice job overall, but we can do better. We're not where we should be in 1-meter. But today will serve as good motivation for us."
Junior Jennifer Cristy was also a double winner for IU. Cristy took both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Cristy's times for both events (50 free: 22.94, 100 free: 50.66) were just off her school records from last year.
"I'm not suprised," said Tierney. "Jen's more confident now, and has good control over her races. Her strength has really helped her to improve."
Megan Ryther was IU's other individual winner. Ryther took the 1000 free. Her time of 10:16.53 was more than ten seconds faster than the Wildcats' Kelly Miller (10:27.93) who took second in the event. Ryther also took second in the 500 free (5:06.72).
Ellie Lallman also turned in a great performance for the Hoosiers. Lallman was third in the 500 free (5:07.16) and second in the 200 free (1:54.19). Tina Gretlund continues her improvement. Gretlund took second in both the 200 IM (2:09.13) and the 200 butterfly (2:05.39)
"This has been our best race so far this season," said head swim coach Dorsey Tierney. The Hoosiers improved in seven events, just from last weekend.
IU's next chance for improvement comes next Friday, November 12, as the
Hoosiers play host to Ball State at 4 p.m. Then on Saturday the 13th, IU
teams up with the men to host Cincinnati for a 2 p.m. showdown. Both events
are in the Counsilman/Billingsley aquatics center.
