WRESTLING HOOSIERS DEFEAT WISCONSIN
BLOOMINGTON, IND. - The Indiana University wrestling team won its second Big Ten match of the season, defeating the Wisconsin Badgers 21-16. In an exciting meet, the Hoosiers used a pin from Brian Smiley and a forfeit from Wisconsin at the 157 pound weight class to extend its record to 8-5-1 (2-5 Big Ten), while the Badgers dropped to 3-11-1, 0-6 Big Ten).
The Hoosier wrestlers ranked in the top 25 performed well. Number 13 Pat Cassidy (125) defeated #15 Kevin Black, 11-9 in overtime. Kevin Stanley (157), ranked #13, won by forfeit, and #12 Viktor Sveda (184) handed Wisconsin's Steve Alf a loss, 9-4.
The other two Hoosiers ranked, #19 James Torres (141) and #17 Mike Powell (174), each gave strong efforts, but came out on the short end. Torres lost to Matt Goldstein, 5-3, and Powell was defeated by #7 Kole Clauson, 7-3.
The Hoosiers next, and last, home meet will be on Sunday, February 14, 1999 at University Gym against Michigan State. The meet will get started at 1:00 p.m.
