WRESTLERS COMPETE AT NCAA'S
State College, Pa. - Four IU wrestlers competed at the NCAA Championships Thursday through Saturday at the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State.
Freshman Viktor Sveda, a No. 12 seed, was the top Hoosier finisher. Sveda finished sixth in the 184 pound division after falling 10-3 to the No. 4 seed, John Van Doren of Lehigh in the fifth place match. Sveda lost his second round match and then won four wrestleback matches to get to the fifth place match.
IU sophomore Kevin Stanley, the No. 12 seed, won his first round match 8-6 over Russell Bend of Boston in the 157 weight class. Stanley then lost his second round match and his first wrestleback match.
Junior Pat Cassidy, the No. 9 seed in the 125 pound division, made it to the quarterfinals before falling 15-2 to top-ranked Stephen Abas of Fresno State. Cassidy then lost his first wrestleback match to conclude the weekend.
IU junior James Torres wrestled in the 141 pound weight class. Torres started with a loss to No. 6 Whitey Chlebove of West Virginia in the first round, and then went 1-1 in his wrestlebacks.
