CASSIDY, STANLEY, AND SVEDA SCORE BIG WINS
Bloomington, Indiana - Pat Cassidy, Kevin Stanley, and Viktor Sveda all gained tough wins over ranked opponents as the 22nd-ranked Hoosiers fell to No. 6 Illinois 31-9 in at University Gymnasium Friday night.
Cassidy (20-1, 1-0 Big Ten), ranked fifth nationally at 125, defeated ninth-ranked Ryan Escobar of Illinois 8-7. Cassidy has now won 16 consecutive matches. Stanley (16-1, 1-0), ranked tenth, faced No. 11 Griff Powell at 157. The two battled even through regulation and entered overtime tied at one. Stanley figured out how to score the first takedown of the match and came away with the 3-1 triumph after the extra session. The final IU victory came at 197 as Sveda (19-3, 1-0 Big Ten), ranked 14th, upset No. 6 Pat Quirk 5-2. Sveda scored two takedowns in the final period to gain the victory.
The Hoosiers (9-3, 0-1) battled tough in several other weight classes, but were unable to gain the decision. IU heavyweight Michael Dixon (12-13, 0-1) lost a tough 5-3 decision to No. 4 John Lockhart and Hoosier Gabe Cook (8-4, 0-1) fell 7-6 to Dave Stoltz at 133.
The Hoosiers will face another tough opponent Sunday as they host top-ranked Iowa Sunday at 1 p.m. at University Gymnasium.
