No. 23 HOOSIERS FACE EASTERN MICHIGAN AND No. 3 MINNESOTA
MEET INFORMATION: The 22nd-ranked Hoosiers host Eastern Michigan Friday evening at 5 p.m. at University Gymnasium. The Hoosiers then travel to Minneapolis for a conference battle with third-ranked Minnesota Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Minnesota meet will be televised live by Midwest Sports Channel.

HEAD COACH DUANE GOLDMAN... is in his eighth season as the head coach and tenth season with the program. He has a career dual meet record of 86-47-3 (.643), and has coached five individuals to seven All-America honors. Goldman is just the seventh coach in the program's history and ranks fourth all-time in wins with 86.
LAST MEET: IU sophomore Viktor Sveda continued to impress the 197 pound
weight class as he improved to 20-3 (2-0 Big Ten) with a win over Lee Weber
of Iowa Sunday afternoon at University Gymnasium.
Sveda, ranked 14th nationally, was an All-American at 184 last year before
moving up this season. He used this weekend to state that he is not affected
by the move. Friday, he knocked off sixth-ranked Pat Quirk of Illinois and
came right back with the 10-5 victory Sunday. Sveda dominated Weber early,
scoring two takedowns in the first period. Weber rallied in the second to
pull within 6-5 after two, but Sveda sealed it midway through the final
period with a takedown.
The 22nd-ranked Hoosiers(9-4, 0-2 Big Ten) scored three points from Sveda
and three more from freshman Dan Cysewski as they fell 37-6 against top-ranked
Iowa (11-0, 2-0 Big Ten).
Cysewski (4-11, 1-1 Big Ten) gained his win at 149 with a 6-1 decision over
Ben Shirk of the Hawkeyes. Cysewski score two takedowns and a reversal while
allowing just one point on a Shirk escape.
IU wrestlers lost close matches at 125, 174, and 184. At 125, fifth-ranked
Pat Cassidy (20-2, 1-1 Big Ten) fell 5-4 to third-ranked Jody Strittmatter.
The score was tied at four at the end of regulation, but Strittmatter picked
up a point with exactly one minute of riding time, which gave him the match.
At 184, Brett Becks (2-3, 0-2 Big Ten) battle Jessman Smith evenly into
the second period. Becks trailed 4-3 before having to withdrawal due to
injury at 4:23. At 174, Mingo Morrison fell 4-2 to Scott Kauffman. Morrison
trailed 3-0 before picking up two points in the third on Kauffman penalties.
IN THE RANKINGS: The Hoosiers are No. 23 in the InterMat and No. 22 the coaches' polls. Also, four Hoosiers made the InterMat top 20 for their respective weight classes: senior Pat Cassidy is fifth at 125, junior Kevin Stanley is 10th at 157, sophomore Viktor Sveda is 14th at 197, and freshman Ty Matthews is 18th at 184 pounds. WORLD CLASS: IU assistant coach Charles Burton is a member of the United State Freestyle Wrestling Team. Burton is ranked second nationally in the 187.25 pound weight class. He won the gold medal at a world-class event in Iran in January. The event included the top-ranked wrestler in the world. He will next compete for the US in world duals against Russia (Feb. 8 in Edinboro, Pa.) and Cuba (Feb. 15 in Houston, Texas).
TORRES RETURNS: Two-time NCAA qualifier, James Torres, returned to the Hoosier lineup at the Wendy's Duals after missing the first two months of the season. He went 2-0 in his first competition since returning.
165, 174, AND 187 ARE KEY: The Hoosiers are unbeaten in dual meets when winning at each of these weights. IU is 7-0 when taking 165, 6-0 when winning 174, and 8-0 with a triumph at 184. Likewise, Indiana is 2-4, 3-4, and 1-4, respectively, when losing those weights.
INJURY REPORT: Four Hoosiers are out with injuries for this weekend: Michael Bundy (cracked vertebrae in neck, indefinite), Brett Becks (to be determined), Butch Hildebrand (fractured knee cap, indefinite), and Jack Wade (sprained knee, 2-3 weeks).
WHAT A STREAK: Viktor Sveda (197) has won all ten Big Ten dual meet matches of his career.
RETURNING QUALIFIERS: The Hoosiers return five NCAA Qualifiers: Pat Cassidy (125), James Torres (141), Kevin Stanley (157), Viktor Sveda (184, now at 197), and Michael Dixon (HWT)
MULTI-MEET MANIA: The Hoosiers have competed in more than one meet on the same day four times this year and are 4-0 in the first meet, 3-1 in the second meet, and 2-1 in their third meet of the day.
HOOSIERS ON TV: IU will make its first television appearance of the season in the match at Minnesota. The 4 p.m. match will be on Midwest Sports Channel. Also, USA Sports Broadcasting will televise the Hoosiers meet at Purdue February 20. The channel and commentators will be released when a available. The match begins at 1 p.m.
KING PIN: Pat Cassidy has nine pins this season, which ties him for ninth all-time at IU. He now has 21 for his career, which is tied for sixth at Indiana with Sam Komar (1975-78). Cassidy leads all current Hoosiers in season and career pins.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: IU sophomore Viktor Sveda earned Big Ten Wrestler-of-the-Week honors January 26 after defeating No. 10 Lee Weber of Iowa and No. 6 Pat Quirk of Illinois on the opening weekend of conference competition.
48 AND CLIMBING: Five current Hoosiers have at least 48 career wins: Kevin Stanley, 66; Viktor Sveda, 62; Pat Cassidy, 52; James Torres, 49; and Butch Hildebrand, 48 .
NO ROOM FOR DOUBT: IU wrestlers have combined for 46 pins in 292 (181-111) matches this season. That's 25.4 percent of the Hoosier victories and 15.8 percent of all matches are won by fall. Pat Cassidy leads the team with nine pins in 21 matches, and Butch Hildebrand and Viktor Sveda are next as each have seven pins in 21 and 22 matches, respectively.
NOT GOING THE DISTANCE: The current roster has picked up 115 career pins combined, including 46 this season.
PLAYING PERCENTAGES: Viktor Sveda has an .873 (62-9) career winning percentage which ranks eighth on the IU career list.
TOUGH LEAGUE: Ten of the 11 Big Ten teams are ranked or receiving votes in the InterMat Top 25 . Nine of those teams are in the Top 25 and three are in the top 10.

COYTE COOPER: went 5-0 with two pins and three wins by at least eight points as he wont the freshman/sophomore division of the St. Louis Open.
