SVEDA NAMED BIG TEN WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Bloomington, Indiana - IU sophomore Viktor Sveda was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week for his wins over 10th-ranked Lee Weber of Iowa and sixth-ranked Pat Quirk of Illinois.
Sveda defeated Quirk 5-2 as the Hoosiers opened the conference season at home in University Gymnasium Friday. Sveda and Quirk were tied entering the third period, but Sveda scored two takedowns to claim the victory. He followed that with a 10-5 win over Weber Sunday. Sveda dominated Weber early, scoring two takedowns in the first period. Weber rallied in the second to pull within 6-5 after two, but Sveda sealed it midway through the final period with a takedown.
Sveda, ranked 11th at 197, is now 20-3 on the year and 2-0 in league matches. Sveda was an All-America in 1999 at 184 before moving up a weight class this season, and is perfect in conference dual meets for his career at 10-0.
The 23rd-ranked Hoosiers (9-4, 0-2 Big Ten) host Eastern Michigan Friday evening at 5 p.m. at University Gymnasium. IU then travels for a conference showdown with third-ranked Minnesota Saturday at 4 p.m.
