Cristy Breaks 20-year old record
East Lansing, Mich-- Indiana's women's swim team is hot. The Hoosiers beat host Michigan State 191-180, and lost to Penn State 221-147 in a double dual meet this weekend. But that's not the story tonight.
The story is that junior All-American Jennifer Cristy broke Indiana's 20-year old record in the 200 yard freestyle. Cristy's time of 1:51.11 was just one one-hundredth faster than Jennifer Hooker-Brinegar's 1980 record of 1:51.12. In the process, Cristy broke Michigan State's pool record. But she wasn't alone. Tina Gretlund also broke a MSU pool record. Gretlund's time of 4:25.80 in the 400 IM was nearly seven seconds faster than the previous mark, set in 1997. Gretlund's mark was also nearly five seconds faster than the team's previous season best.
Although the team finished the weekend 1-1, they set seven new team season bests, and had two provisional NCAA qualifications. The Indiana Divers also set NCAA qualifying marks. Sara Reiling won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events and in the process qualified for the NCAA's (1-meter: 433.65, 3-meter: 550.27).
Weekend highlights include Erin Rice's 500 free win (4:57.73), which marked the first time in two years that an Indiana swimmer swam under five minutes. Megan Ryther's 1650 free win (17:03.71) was also a season best for the Hoosiers. Another season best performance came from Susan Woessner in the 100 Backstroke (57.52). Cristy and Gretlund also had season bests. Cristy picked up two new marks (100 free: 50.48, 200 free, 1:51.11), as did Gretlund (200 IM: 2:05.68, 400 IM: 4:25.80).
Indiana now has three weeks off until the Big Ten Championships.
