HOOSIERS SPLIT ON DAY ONE AT THE VIRGINIA DUALS
Hampton, Virginia ­ The Indiana wrestling team defeated Hofstra and fell to seventh ranked Michigan on the first day of the Virginia Duals.
The Hoosiers (4-1) faced Hofstra in the first round of the double-elimination tournament, scoring a 19-18 win. The teams split the ten matches with IU winning four of the last five weight classes. Fifth ranked Pat Cassidy (13-1) gave the Hoosiers an early lead with a 3-0 decision at 125.
IU then dropped the next four before making the run to victory. 19th ranked Butch Hildebrand (14-4) started the streak with a 5-3 overtime win at 165, Jack Wade (3-5) followed with a 16-3 win at 174, and Ty Matthews (12-4) took a 6-4 decision at 184. Ninth ranked Viktor Sveda (13-2) concluded the IU scoring with his sixth pin of the year at 197.
The Hoosiers then faced the Wolverines in the quarterfinal, falling 18-16. The teams again split the ten matches with Sveda and Cassidy winning for the second time on the afternoon. Gabe Cook (4-1) won at 133, fifth ranked Kevin Stanley (9-1) claimed a 14-7 victory at 157, and Tim Myers (9-3) garnered a 12-7 triumph at 149.
The Hoosiers continue Saturday in the consolation bracket of the Virginia Duals.
