Hoosiers Kick Off 2000-01 Against Evansville
Indiana will open intercollegiate competition for the 2000-2001 season against the University of Evansville Saturday, October 21. The Hoosiers will host the Purple Aces at Counsilman and Billingsley Acquatic Center.
Inside the Series
The Indiana women’s swimming and diving program has never faced the University of Evansville. The in-state competition will kick-off the fall season.
Head Swimming Coach Dorsey Tierney
Head Dorsey Tierney begins her third year as head coach of the Indiana women’s swim team. She is a gold medalist in 200 meter breaststroke in the 1987 Pan-American games and was a captain on the 1991 team. Tierney was a finalist in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Trials.
Quoting Tierney
"We’re looking forward to getting started. The team has progressed quite steadily. It’s time for people to start stepping up, and a dual meet is good for fall competition."
"We have a fairly veteran team this year. There are five freshmen who have made steady progression due to the juniors and seniors on this team."
Head Diving Coach Dr. Jeff Huber
Head Coach Dr. Jeff Huber returns as a six-time Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year and two time U.S. National Diving Coach of the Year. He coached Indiana diver Sara Reiling to a 13th place finish in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Quoting Huber
"This time of year we have worked a lot on the basics. If they don’t dive well, it’s not that bad. We look forward to the Big Ten’s and the NCAA’s."
"Everybody is working on skills and the basics right now. Even though we are not where we are supposed to be for the end of the season, we are not sacrificing this part of the season for the end."
Olympic Quality
Seniors Jen Cristy and Amanda Noblet, juniors Sara Reiling and Susan Woessner, sophomore Anne Williams, and freshman Sarah Fiden competed in the Olympic trials in Indianapolis in August.
Reiling qualified for The Games in the platform dive and finished 13th in Sydney. Cristy finished 20th in the 50 freestyle, 26th the 100 freestyle, and 56th in the 200 freestyle at trials. Woessner finished 20th in the 100 backstroke while Noblet placed 22nd in the 200 backstroke. Fiden placed 60th in the 200 freestyle and 71st in the 400 freestyle. Williams finished 97th in the 100 freestyle. Reiling will not be competing this semester, but will return to the team in January.
Cream Rises to the Top
The Indiana women's swimming team competed in an intrasquad scrimmage Friday afternoon. The afternoon featured four 200 yard medley teams as the squad was divided into Cream and Crimson teams. The Cream took victory with 108 points to the Crimson's 58.
Junior Sarah Woessner won the 200 yard freestyle and the 200 back. She took the free in 1:55.98 and the back in 2:07.51.
Indiana's men's team also participated. Both teams play host to the University of Evansville October 21.
Hoosiers Walk for Cancer Research
Roughly three weeks ago, the Indiana men’s and women's swimming and diving team participated in a walk to benefit cancer. The teams took a special interest in this year's walk because their former trainer, and IU 200 fly record-holder, Stephanie Jannsen (Porter) was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Head women’s coach Dorsey Tierney said, "This is an important day for IU swimming. It is a great way to show support for something that affects so many women, but it is especially special today because of the battle Stephanie is undertaking."
Back for More
Senior Erin Quinn returns to competition after tearing a ligament in her elbow during 1999 NCAA's and red shirting last year. She hopes to come back to All-American status on all three diving levels.
2000-01 Outlook
This year’s squad returns all of their conference point-scorers from the previous season. All-American freestyler Jenn Cristy will be looked upon to lead the charge. The Hoosiers return 24 letterwinnners from the 1999-2000 campaign, and add six swimmers. IU looks to be especially strong in the sprint events, but will enjoy improvement in all events from last season. In 1999 the Hoosiers welcomed 19 new faces.
Sprints
"Probably our deepest area is sprints this year," said Tierney. Look for Jenn Cristy to continue her assault on IU’s record books, as she leads this talented sprint corps. Anne Williams, coming off a freshman campaign that saw her make the finals of the 100 free at Big Tens, will be the Hoosiers number-two sprinter behind Cristy.
Distance
Look for newcomer Sarah Fiden to make a hug splash in the middle distance events. "Sarah’s very strong in the 200 and 500, even though the mile is her best," said Tierney.
Backstroke
The Hoosiers return 100 back record holder Susan Woessner, and 200 record holder Amanda Noblet to lead the backstrokers.
Butterfly
"We recruited Jillian Lathrop for the sprint fly," said Tierney. Look for McCracken to also be a factor in the fly, as she did outstanding at the conference meet.
Diving
The Indiana diving program returns fresh off their fifth-straight national title. The Hoosiers will be led by 2000 U.S. Olympic diver, Big Ten Diver of the Year, and National three-meter champion Sara Reiling.
"She’s the national champion this year, but I still feel her best diving is ahead of her," said head coach Jeff Huber. "She had a good year, close to a great year, but I’d like to see her improve on a couple of things. Her experience will really help in this upcoming year."
Reiling, a three-time All-American, will be joined by All-American sophomore Erin Quinn, who returns after a medical redshirt year.
