HOOSIERS DOMINATE NORTHWESTERN AND MARQUETTE
Evanston, Ill. - The Indiana wrestling squad dominated Northwestern (6-9-1, 1-4 Big Ten) for its first Big Ten victory of the season. The Hoosiers (12-7, 1-5 Big Ten) took seven weight classes on the way to the 29-4 victory.
Senior Pat Cassidy (Bloomington, Ind./North H.S.) and freshman Dan Cysewski (Vernon Hills, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) scored pins at 125 and 165 respectively. Cassidy, ranked fifth nationally at 125, moved into a tie for fifth on the IU career pins list with 23. Cassidy (23-4, 3-3 Big Ten) now has 11 for the season which is tied for the seventh best season in IU history. Cysewski (7-13, 2-4 Big Ten) claimed the win despite moving up two weight classes. He has moved from 141 to 165 due to injuries and the return of senior James Torres.
Torres (Schereville, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten with an 8-7 decision at 141. Fellow senior Tim Myers won his match in dominating style, 23-8 at 149. Myers (11-7, 1-2 Big Ten) lost two matches last weekend, but appeared to be back in top form after missing January with a broken finger on his right hand.
Freshman Ty Matthews (Jerome, Idaho.Jerome) scored a big upset for IU at 184. Matthews (18-8, 2-2 Big Ten) gained the 7-3 decision over 17th-ranked Tom Ciezki of Northwestern. Ninth-ranked Viktor Sveda (Peninsula, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit H.S.) continued to roll against unranked opponents with a 12-4 win at 197. Sveda (23-5, 4-2 Big Ten) is 18-1 this year against unranked foes. Eleventh-ranked junior Kevin Stanley (Richmond, Mo./Oak Grove H.S.) scored a 10-5 decision in the 157 match as he improved to 19-4 overall and 3-3 in league dual meets.
The Hoosiers also took eight weight classes in the 32-12 victory over Marquette.
Torres scored his first pin of the season at 6:53 in the win at 141. All three ranked Hoosiers also won: Cassidy gained a 5-3 decision, Stanley won 8-4 at 157, and Sveda earned a major decision (14-5) at 197.
The Hoosiers travel to Michigan for a dual meet with the Wolverines Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m.
