CASSIDY AND HILDEBRAND WIN ON SENIOR NIGHT
Bloomington, Ind. - Pat Cassidy and Butch Hildebrand led IU to a 22-21 triumph over Eastern Illinois in the final home meets of their careers Thursday night at University Gymnasium. The Hoosiers (14-8) then knocked off Southern Illinois - Edwardsville 43-12.
Hildebrand claimed a 2-1 decision at 165 over Mike Kelly of EIU to improve to 16-6 on the year. Hildebrand wrestled for the first time since fracturing his knee cap in early January.
"It's just been sore because I haven't been able to do much," said Hildebrand. "But it didn't bother me during the meet."
Cassidy (27-4) was dominant in his 13-5 win over Eastern Illinois' Tim Nilles. Cassidy, ranked fifth at 125, scored four takedowns and a reversal in the final period, allowing Nilles to escape each time as he worked for the major decision. That point would prove crucial down the stretch in the one-point team victory.
IU's other two ranked wrestlers pinned their opponents. Eighth-ranked Viktor Sveda (27-5) pinned Zach Derrico of Eastern Illinois 4:27 into their 197-pound match. This was Sveda's 10th pin of the year which is tied for ninth in a season at Indiana. He now has 19 for his career to tie for eighth in IU history. Kevin Stanley, ranked 12th at 157, took just 2:25 to pin EIU's Frank DeFilippis. Stanley's fourth pin of the season improved his record to 23-4.
Ty Matthews (21-9) also gained a 5-2 decision at 184. Matthews trailed 2-1 entering the final period before scoring an escape, a takedown, and a point for riding time. Matthews also scored a major decision over Ross Renken in the Southern Illinois meet.
The Hoosiers conlclued the dual meet season at Purdue Sunday. The match begins at 1 p.m.
