SIX HOOSIERS QUALIFY FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Six Indiana Wrestlers advanced to the NCAA Championships March 16-18 in St. Louis, Missouri. The event is at the Kiel Cnter and begins at 11 a.m. daily. The second session of each day begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are available through Ticketmaster.

IU's 11 top ten finishes at the NCAA Division I Championships
are tied for 17th.

(10 years are known. The NCAA only has first and second place
officially for 1933.)
HEAD COACH DUANE GOLDMAN... is in his eighth season as the head coach and tenth season with the program. He has a career dual meet record of 92-51-3 (.640), and has coached five individuals to seven All-America honors. Goldman is just the seventh coach in the program's history and ranks fourth all-time in wins with 92.
IN THE RANKINGS: The Hoosiers are ranked 23rd in the InterMat poll. Also, five Hoosiers made the InterMat top 20 for their respective weight classes: senior Pat Cassidy is fourth at 125, senior James Torres is 17th at 141, junior Kevin Stanley is 12th at 157, freshman Ty Matthews is 20th at 184, and sophomore Viktor Sveda is eighth at 197. WORLD CLASS: IU assistant coach Charles Burton is a member of the United State Freestyle Wrestling Team. Burton is ranked second nationally in the 187.25 pound weight class. He won the gold medal at a world-class event in Iran in January. The event included the top-ranked wrestler in the world. He will next compete for the US in world duals against Russia (Feb. 8 in Edinboro, Pa.) and Cuba (Feb. 15 in Houston, Texas).
SIXTH SENSE: Six Hoosiers advanced to the 2000 NCAA Championships. That is the second highest under Goldman. IU is one of just 23 teams to advance at least six to this years championships.
BACK FOR SECONDS: Four Hoosiers return to the NCAA Championships for the at least the second time: Pat Cassidy (125), James Torres (141), Kevin Stanley (157), and Viktor Sveda (All-American at 184, now at 197).
BATTLING THE BEST: Viktor Sveda is 8-4 against ranked opponents and 4-2 in matches with top-ten foes.
AUTOMATIC QUALIFIERS: The top seven from each weight class at the Big Ten Championships automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. Five Hoosiers earned automatic berths: Pat Cassidy(125 - 4th), James Torres (141 - 5th), Tim Myers (149 - 6th), Kevin Stanley (157 - 5th), and Viktor Sveda (197 - 3rd).
WILD CARD: Ty Matthews earned one of the two Big Ten wild card selections. Matthews finished eighth at 184 in the Big Ten Championships.
KINGS OF PIN: Pat Cassidy has 12 pins this season, which is tied for sixth all-time at IU. He now has 24 for his career, which is fifth at Indiana . Cassidy leads all current Hoosiers in season and career pins. Viktor Sveda has 20 pins for his career which is eighth on the IU career list. Sveda is up to 11 this year which ties for eighth at IU in a season.
FOUR THE RECORD: The current roster has four of the top 13 career pin totals in IU history. Pat Cassidy is fifth with 24, Viktor Sveda eighth with 20, Kevin Stanley is 11th with 17, and James Torres is tied for 12th with 16. All four made the 2000 NCAA Championships.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: IU sophomore Viktor Sveda earned Big Ten Wrestler-of-the-Week honors January 26 after defeating No. 10 Lee Weber of Iowa and No. 6 Pat Quirk of Illinois on the opening weekend of conference competition.
59 AND CLIMBING: Four of the six IU qualifiers have at least 59 career victories: Viktor Sveda, 78; Kevin Stanley, 77; Pat Cassidy, 62; James Torres, 59; and Butch Hildebrand, 51 .
NOT GOING THE DISTANCE: The six Hoosier qualifiers have a combined 44 pins this season and 81 career pins.
PLAYING PERCENTAGES: Viktor Sveda has an .867 (78-12) career winning percentage which is ninth on the IU career list.
INCOMING: The Hoosiers have signed two wrestlers for next season. Dustin Heist of Meadville, Pennsylvania will probably wrestle at 174 or 184 and Pat DeGain of Clarkston, Michigan will enter at 197 or heavyweight.
BROTHERS OPPOSED: IU assistant coach Lenny Zalesky is the brother of Iowa head coach Jim Zalesky.
