Final Races Draw Hoosiers Closer to Victory
Save the best for last. In a double dual meet that Indiana women's swimming knew would be the toughest of the year, the Hoosiers closed day one with a 400-medley relay victory. Susan Woessner, Megan Geers, Tina Gretlund, and Jenn Cristy pulled together to emerge in 3:48.31, 1.37 seconds better than second place Penn State. The win brought the score to within ten points of Penn State, and the Hoosiers are looking to return tomorrow on the same high they closed with tonight. At the end of day one, Indiana leads Michigan State 74-36 and trails Penn State 60-50.
The emotional relay victory followed a Cristy 50 free win in a season best 23.48. Cristy knocked .10 seconds off of her best time this season. Also crucial in this conference meet was the diving, particularly against Penn State. Jennifer Sonneborn took third place behind two Spartans, and Erin Quinn and Cassandra Cardinell finished with only one Penn State diver ahead of them for fifth and sixth.
Sarah Fiden led IU in the distance lanes taking third in the 500 free in 5:00.12. Erin Rice in 5:02.49 and Jenny Bechem in 5:02.7 closed the Hoosier pack for fourth and fifth. Indiana opened the meet with a second place showing in the 200 free relay. Cristy, Anne Williams, Sarah Bowman, and Woessner finished in 1:35.21. Tina Gretlund placed third in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:05.69.
The meet concludes Saturday at McCoy Natatorium in University Park, Pa.
