Gretlund Spends Thanksgiving in Competition in Denmark
|
Junior Tina Gretlund spent her Thanksgiving break competing at the National Championships in her home country of Denmark. |
Gretlund, who holds the school record in the 200 butterfly and the 200 individual medley, spent Nov. 24-25 competing with her club squad at the National Championships in Esbjerg, Denmark.
She competed in the 400-meter individual medley, the 400-meter freestyle relay, the 800-meter freestyle relay, the 200-meter butterfly and the 100-meter individual medley.
The competition differed slightly from NCAA swimming because instead of being competed in short-course yards, the pool is in short-course meters, which is slightly longer than the NCAA pool.
The 400-meter individual medley had Gretlund finish in second with a time of 4:47.39. The 400-meter freestyle relay had Gretlund leading off for her team and leading them to victory with a time of 3:51.71. The 800-meter freestyle relay had Gretlund's team finishing in second with a time of 8:31.67. In the 200-meter butterfly, Gretlund also finished second behind a teammate with a time of 2:14.73. In her final event, the 100-meter individual medley, Gretlund finished in second with a time of 1:05.41.
Her team, KVIK 1, finished second in the overall points standings with 55575 points which was less than 20 points behind the champion, West Swim 1.
"Tina had a great championship," said Indiana University Head Coach Dorsey Tierney. "Her times were great and she had a solid weekend overall. Its great to see her do so well."
Gretlund will next compete when the Hoosiers open their spring season on January 12 against Ohio State in a coed dual meet at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
