Indiana Wins Varsity and Novice Eight over Louisville
Bloomington, Ind.-- Despite less than favorable weather conditions, Indiana women's crew captured two victories over Louisville on Saturday. The varsity eight A boat took first in 7:05.9, dominating the last 1000m. The novice eight boat won in 7:56.3. Winds of 15-20 miles per hour and a wind chill of 16-20 degrees prevented the four boats from racing.
"With conditions like this, you equate it to some other sport. Think about playing basketball on an ice hockey rink. Nobody wants to row under these conditions, but anytime you win by more than two or three seconds, that's good."
The varsity eight A beat out Louisville by 6.2 seconds. The varsity eight B boat caught a crab at about the 1200m mark and finished in 7:51.0.for third
"I expected to win. I didn't tell them that, but I'm going to expect them to win most races. That's the way we have to approach things," said coach Mark Wilson. Our boat started to make a move at around the 1000m mark, which is what we want to do. We want to be able to move from the 1000 to the 1500 and keep going to the 2000. They did a nice job."
The novice four boat was the first to take to 2000 meter course. An oar caught a crab at the 1200m mark but the boat fought back to win the race in 7:56.3, just 1.4 seconds ahead of Louisville.
"First time out, rough water. We had a major crab at about the 1200m mark. One girl lost her oar and went clear overhead, lost her seat, and basically couldn't row. That brought the boat down for a good 200m. They finally got it back and rowed the last 200m without a seat, and we still won. They pulled it out," said Wilson.
Indiana next competes March 31 and April 1 at the Kansas Invite in Lawrence, Kansas.
