Varsity Eight Top IU Boat at Big Ten Championship
Belleville, Mich. -- Indiana rowing participated in its second Big Ten Championship Saturday, finishing seventh with 16 points. Michigan claimed its second consecutive title with 56 points, defeating runner-up Ohio State who finished with 43. Due to injuries, Indiana raced only four boats, but was able to score three of them. Minnesota finished two points ahead of the Hoosiers for sixth. Indiana did not race in the first novice eight boat, in which Minnesota finished second for four points.
IU's first varsity eight contributed 12 of the team's points, finishing second in the petite final and sixth overall in 6:45.62. The Hoosiers outrowed the Minnesota boat, which finished third in the heat in 6:48.52. No. 18 Wisconsin won the heat in 6:34.00, the closest Indiana has ever come to the Badgers. In the second varsity eight, Indiana finished third in the petite final and seventh overall for two points. The first varsity four also raced in the petite final, finishing second (sixth overall). They clocked in at 8:01.24 for two points. Indiana's second varsity four finished seventh in 7:49.96. Only the top three boats in this race scored.
"I'm very proud of the girls," said coach Mark Wilson. "It's a little disappointing when you can't put out as many boats as we would have liked to, but they responded well, especially considering there were so many line-up changes between the beginning of the week and race time. They continue to learn and that shows on the water."
The Hoosiers return to competition May 12-13 in Oak Ridge, Tenn for Central Regionals.
