Indiana Novices Sweep the Competition
Bloomington, Ind.-- Indiana rowing emerged from the quad meet Saturday with two victories, each coming from the novice boats. The novice eight won in the biggest field of the day, beating out Cincinnati, Dayton, and Northwestern in the 2,000m course in 7:55.29. Cincinnati finished second in 8:07.87. The novice four outdid its nearest competitor Northwestern by 33 seconds, taking first in 9:54.60.
IU's varsity eight finished second to Dayton by just over a second in 7:38.68. The Flyers won in 7:37.58. Indiana had caught a crab in the first 200m and fell two boat lengths behind third place finisher Cincinnati. The Hoosiers surged past the Bearcats and caught the Flyers with 500m to go. Indiana finished on the wrong side of the finish buoy for second.
The varsity four had a last minute line-up change and went with a group that had never rowed together before. The boat finished second in 8:43.17.
"The varsity has improved since last weekend, and they said this is their best row of the season. They're getting more comfortable in the water, they're more in control, they have better recovery, and it shows in races like these," said coach Mark Wilson.
Indiana hosts the Indiana Cup April 14 at Lake Lemon.
