Varsity Four in Petite Final at Central Regions
In the last weekend of competition, Indiana rowers continue to improve and move forward. At Central Regions, the varsity eight qualified for Sunday's petite final with an afternoon row stronger than their morning effort. The Hoosiers will be fighting for fifth place amongst 19 competitive schools. In the first race, Indiana placed fourth in 8:08. Ohio State advanced to the finals with a time of 7:31. Iowa took second in 7:34 and Notre Dame placed third in 7:52. Tulsa in fifth at 8:51 and Clemson in sixth in 8:19 rounded out the finishers. Indiana advanced to the Repechage and again claimed fourth place. Iowa crossed the finish line first in 7:49, followed by Kansas in 8:09. Indiana gave up ground to Tennessee at the 800 meter mark, but fought back at the 1,300 meter mark. The Hoosiers ran out of room and finished three seconds behind the Jayhawks in 8:20. Tulsa finished fifth in 9:10.
The varsity eight also had a solid race, battling strong competition. Indiana placed fifth in 7:03, defeating SMU by three seconds. Michigan State won the heat in 6:47. Iowa placed second in 6:50, Duke third in 6:58, and Kansas State fourth in 7:00. Indiana held a lead on Kansas State until the 1,300 meter mark, when the Wildcats made their move. The Hoosiers fought back but ran out of room. The finish sends them to the C final on Sunday.
"The girls rowed their hearts out," said coach Mark Wilson."There was great racing across the board, by every school in every heat. We continue to get better with only one day of the season left."
The varsity eight races at 8:45 a.m. and the varsity four takes the water at 10 a.m. Sunday.
