Varsity Eight Breaks Seven Minutes
Two strong rows closed out the 2001 sprint season for Indiana's rowing team. The varsity eight broke the seven minute barrier for the first time Sunday at Central Regions with a time of 6:52 for second place in the C final. Clemson won the heat in 6:44.9. North Carolina finished third in 6:54.6, SMU fourth in 6:57.3, and Cincinnati fifth in 6:59.4. North Carolina and Cincinnati entered the race with faster times than the Hoosiers. Indiana turned in the ninth fastest first varsity eight time of the day.
The varsity four finished fourth in 8:05.8 in the petite final. Notre Dame crossed first in 7:48. Texas took second in 7:54.5 and Tennessee took third in 7:56.7. SMU in 8:13.8 and Tulsa in 8:34.0 followed the Hoosiers. Indiana stayed with Tennessee through the middle of the 2,000 meter course, but could not hold on when the Lady Vols made their move. The fourth place petite final finish gives Indiana a tenth place finish overall.
Big Ten schools captured the top three team spots, with Michigan winning with 120 points, Ohio State taking second with 74 points, and Iowa claiming third with 49 points. Indiana did not score.
