Turner Joins Swim Staff
Ron Turner began his Indiana coaching career this week as the women's swimming and diving assistant coach. He joins head coach Dorsey Tierney and diving coach Jeff Huber for the 2001-2002 season. Turner spent the past four years as a student assistant coach at the University of Tennessee. He has 15 years of coaching experience and has coached a junior national champion and several junior and senior national qualifiers. He has led his athletes to Olympic Trials and the NCAA finals and was nominated for Georgia Coach of the Year in 1996.
"I am very excited for Ron to join our staff. He brings a tremendous amount of experience with him. He has exceptional knowledge and skills of the maintenance of running a team. We will be creating an atmosphere that will allow the team to focus on developing its swimming talents," said Tierney.
"I look forward to be a part of the success and tradition of Indiana swimming," said Turner. "The hard work that Dorsey, Jeff, and the staff have put into the program speaks for itself. As assistant coach, I look forward to contributing to the continued success of Indiana women's swimming and diving."
Turner graduated from the University of Tennessee this May with a B.S. in communications and a minor in sport management. He is a 1993 graduate of the United States Swimming Coaches College. He swam at Indian River Community College from 1987-1989 where he was part of the NJCAA National Champion team. A native of Columbia, S.C., he is a former South Carolina state record holder and Junior Olympic champion.
