Indiana Concludes Fall Season (10-27-02)

Elkhart, IN - The Indiana Varsity and Novice rowing teams concluded its fall season today at the Head of the Elk regatta. The Hoosier squad has shown improvement and has gained a sense of confidence after completing five fall regattas.
"I feel good about how we ended our fall season," head coach Mark Wilson said. "We got stronger on every race we had. I know that the team is excited to continue conditioning and work in the weight room. They have gained confidence throughout the fall and we are getting closer to other teams that are national competitors."
The first race of the day for the Hoosiers was the Open Pairs event. Four IU boats took part in this competition. Stephanie Mast and Emily Rumschlag finished first for Indiana and second overall out of nine boats with a time of 16:47. The only team that placed ahead of them was Michigan State, who rowed in only eight seconds faster, 16:39.
Erin Koers and Danielle Bird rowed a time of 17:27, good enough for a fourth place finish. Line Espedal and Margaret Clark finished fifth, 17:33, and Meredith De Costa and Kelly Schuiling placed seventh with a time of 18:02.
In the Open Four B event Indiana placed fourth with a time of 16:52. Representing this boat was Stephanie Weert, Sarah Meyer, Amanda Walker, Casey Schoenhoft, and Kristin Storer. Michigan State again captured the No. 1 spot with a time 16:08. Finishing second was Purdue, and third was Miami University (Ohio).
The Novice squad of Katherine MacDonald, Kelley Manchester, Rebecca Hosier, Nicole McCann-Robinson, and Nilaja Neely placed sixth out of nine boats in the Open Four C race. They finished in a time of 19:20.
Coxwain Laura Wharen led Lauren Anderson, Kati Peiss, Ashley Airis, Carly Schilling, Ashley Sylla, Katie Slavik, Barrett Belestra and Laura Teskoski to a fourth place finish in the Novice 8A event with a time of 15:24.
"The Novice A team looked really good today," coach Wilson said. "They rowed exactly to their race plan."
The Novice 8B team had a good row as well, finishing fifth at 16:41. Placing ahead of Indiana was Michigan State, Michigan, Mercyhurst and Purdue, respectively.
The Varsity 8 event proved to be great race, as the Indiana A team finished in 14:32, good enough for fifth place. Representing Indiana A was Becky England as coxwain, Stephanie Mast, Emily Rumschlag, Line Espedal, Margaret Clark, Meredith De Costa, Kelly Schuiling, Erin Koers and Danielle Bird. The first place time, rowed by Michigan State, finished in 13:53. Michigan captured second place (14:04), Michigan State B team was third (14:18), and Louisville was fourth (14:23).
"I am very pleased with the effort," coach Wilson said. "The team is right where I wanted them to be. I wanted them to finish in the top five and they did."
The Hoosiers will continue to train throughout the winter months in preparation for their spring season which begins on Saturday, March 29, 2003 against Notre Dame and Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.
