Hoosiers Ranked In Preseason Polls

Bloomington, Ind. - The 2002-03 wrestling season is less than a month from its debut and the top wrestling publications in the nation have released their preseason rankings. Three Hoosier grapplers were selected as preseason favorites to finish in the top 20 in the nation.
Senior Greg Schaefer was ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News in the 125-pound weight class, although he has made a move to the 133-pound category for the 02-03 season. Schaefer comes off a 2001-02 season where he finished with a 24-10 overall record with seven pins.
At the 141 pound division, junior Coyte Cooper was consistently ranked among the top 10 by Amateur Wrestling News, The Wrestling Mall and W.I.N. Magazine. Both Amateur Wrestling News and The Wrestling Mall ranked Cooper 10th while W.I.N. Magazine placed Cooper 9th. Cooper finished the 2001-02 season with a 22-10 record and five pins. He was IU's top finisher in the Big Ten Championships, taking third.
Sophomore Pat DeGain was also given preseason nods by all these publications at the 197 pound weight class. Amateur Wrestling News listed DeGain 17th while W.I.N. Magazine put him in 16th place. The Wrestling Mall gave DeGain the highest ranking when they picked him as a 10th place finisher in the preseason polls. DeGain ended last season with a 23-11 mark and a 6-2 Big Ten conference record and just missed garnering All-American honors with his 3-2 record at the NCAA Championships.
The season begins Nov. 24 when Hoosier wrestlers travel to Columbia, Mo. for the Missouri Open.
