Bloomington, IN - The Indiana Varsity and Novice rowing teams concluded its fall season this past weekend at the Head of the Elk Regatta in Elkhart, Ind. The Hoosier squad has shown improvement and has gained a sense of confidence after completing five fall regattas.
"I feel good about how we ended our fall season," head coach Mark Wilson said. "We got stronger on every race we had. I know that the team is excited to continue conditioning and work in the weight room. They have gained confidence throughout the fall and we are getting closer to other teams that are national competitors."
Amanda Tallman regarding what she hopes to carry over into the spring...
"I hope to carry over the momentum from the last race. We all have worked so hard and hopefully we can carry this wonderful feeling of power to the spring and make a statement at big tens in the spring!"
Kati Peiss regarding the teams progress throughout the fall...
"The team has grown stronger each and every day this past fall. I am really glad to be a part of this team and to have gotten to know all the women on the team. It has been a great experience for me and hope that we continue to excel over the winter and into the spring season."
Maria Hernandez regarding the teams progress throughout the fall..
"We have learned to come together as a team and follow each other's lead so that we can become an asset to the team as a full boat and not individual people."
Kelly Schiling regarding how the team has progressed...
"We have really come a long ways since the first day of practice. We were placed in boats and had to learn to work with people that we had never rowed with before. I think as a team we were able to really come together and stop focusing on individual performance and really learn the meaning of teamwork."
Schiling on what she hopes to carry over into the spring...
"This winter will be focused on working hard and strengthening up for the spring season. We all need to individually get stronger and push each other as a group to get better. We need to keep focusing in on us as a team so we don't lose that. I think we will come back in the spring ready to go again and be ready to show everyone what we can do. "
Ashley Airis regarding the fall season....
"In my opinion I think that this team has improved immensely. We have all gotten a lot stronger and a lot more confident in the boats. As far as I am concerned I was very nervous going out in the boat and trying to row by 4's. Now I'm not even timid about the 8's. Most importantly, I believe, we have grown as a team. We have gotten so much closer to one another. It's nice knowing the girls better because it feels like rowing together is easier. You know who you are rowing with. This spring looks really promising. I think we will turn some heads and hopefully get better and better."
Jessica Stager on what the team will carry over to the spring...
"I hope the team will be able to carryover the same drive to be better than the day before, the same enthusiasm for the sport, and the same desire to win. And I think we can."
Stephanie Worsham regarding the teams progression...
"We started out like particles in a huge block of ice, moving a little slow and not too close to each other, but we "melted" and not only did we get faster and faster, we also warmed up to each other and formed amazing bonds!"
Shelby Nicol regarding team progress...
"I think our novice team has progressed more than I could ever imagine. I mean most of us went from knowing nothing about the sport, the stroke and the competition to learning as much as we could. Now we know the basics, we've learned the stroke and the technique, and most of us have competed at least once, so we've had a piece of experience too. We are 100% better than the team that first sat in the boats the first day out on the water. Therefore, I'm greatly looking forward to how much more we can improve by the spring season comes."
Nilaja Neely on what she will carry over to the spring...
"I hope I will bring my ambition and determination to beat teams and pass boats. I want us to be the best!!!"
Line Espedal on what the team needs to carry over to the spring....
"We need to keep working on strength and conditioning throughout the winter, so that we will be even more competitive in the spring. I am already excited about the spring season and believe we have the possibility to do really well. Everything coach has stressed at practice started falling into place at the end of the season and we were able to move the boat well through the water. We need to remember that when we get back into the boat so that we can keep moving efficiently even at the higher ratings."
Lauren Anderson regarding team progression...
"The team has made a lot of progress with technique, strength, and working together as a team. We have seen such huge improvements from each race from things such as controlling our slide, driving our legs down, catching together and holding the boat set."
Anderson on what the team needs to carry over into the spring...
"We have had an awesome fall season, I definitely think that we can carry our technique, improvements and positive attitudes into the spring season."
Meredith De Costa regarding team progression...
"This fall season has been an amazing one. Overall, our technique and strength have really improved. But, more than any thing else, our confidence level has increased so much. I think in the past if there was a limiting factor to our success it was our confidence. Now, we have that confidence and know that we can be national contenders in the next season or two."
De Costa on what the team needs to carry over into the spring...
"The most important thing we want to carry over is that confidence; that 'we will win' attitude. It's there. And it never has been before. Hopefully, we can use that 'positive mental' to move ahead."
Becky England regarding the fall improvement....
"This fall season has gone by quickly and we have improved with every race. We definitely put in a lot of hard work physically and mentally together as a team. We need to take that same mental aspect and drive that we had towards the fall season and use it to push us through winter training and into the spring season. These last two races that we had in the fall were two of the best races that I believe we have had overall. If we build on that confidence and encouragement from them, I see even better things happening in the spring and for that I am excited!"
