Hoosiers Fair Well at LemonHead (10-05-02)

Bloomington, IN - In perfect rowing conditions, the Indiana rowing team opened up its fall season today, hosting the fifth annual LemonHead Regatta at Lake Lemon. The Hoosier effort was highlighted by a victorius Novice 4 and the Varsity Eight that placed third.
"Overall, things went well for us," Indiana head coach Mark Wilson said. "I would have liked for the varsity eight's time to be closer to the first place finishers time. I feel that we are in a good position though, we have only been in the eights for a week. I really can't ask for too much more. The team did a great job of bringing everything together."
In the Varsity 8, Indiana A placed tied for third with a time of 16:53. Louisville won the event, while Purdue A finished second. The Varsity A team consisted of coxwain Becky England, Erin Koers, Emily Rumschlag, Stephanie Mast, Margarete Clark, Meredityh DeCosta, Kelly Schuiling, Danielle Bird, and Ashley Quinn.
"We felt good today," captain Becky England said. "We had a lot of stretches where it felt great. Considering that this is only the second day on the water that we have rowed with a full eight, we did a good job and I think that today has built our confidence for the season."
Indiana was also represented with a Varsity 8 B team that placed fifth (17:53) in this event.
In the Novice 4 race, Indiana defeated John Caroll University with a time of 20:36. Representing the Novice 4 were Lauren Anderson, Kati Peiss, Amanda Tallman, Laura Teskoski, and coxwain Laura Wharen.
"I am very pleased with the Novice team, especially since they have only rowed in the four for one week," head Novice coach Angela Leone said. "Lauren Anderson made the switch from her original position of the boat to the opposite side. She has done a great job leading the Novice 4 in the stroke position. Lauren Wharen also did a great job sticking to the race plan."
Danielle Bird and Ashley Quinn placed third in the women's pair event, with a time of 21:29. Louisville team A and B came in before the Hoosier duo with times of 19:50 and 20:03.
Two Indiana teams competed in the Quad race, finishing with times of 19:47 and 22:05.
"I feel that we had a strong performance today," Amanda Tallman said. "We competed better than we expected to. For the regatta next weekend we need to focus on our run (recovery time), and strength in our legs."
In the light 4 the Hoosiers placed sixth with a time of 20:19. Loyala Academy B finished first at 19:33.
The Varsity 4 team of Becky England, Erin Koers, Emily Rumschlag, Stephanie Mast, and Meredith DeCosta wrapped up the women's events for the day, finishing third (18:53), behind Louisvile A, 18:02, and Purdue B, 18:11.
"We have been stressing the small boats (pairs and fours) early in the season," Wilson said. "We really need to work on our strength and the engine. The very first day we got into the eight's I was impressed with the technique. We have really been stressing strength, that is going to be one of our keys."
The Hoosiers travel next to the Head of the Rock Regatta in Rockford, Ill. on October 13. Last year the Hoosiers placed 16th in the open eight and 6th in the open four at the event.
