Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana women's swimming and diving team started off slow, but lead after one day of the Indiana Invitational. The Hoosiers hold a 16-point lead over second place Tennessee, 222-216. Arkansas is third with 192 followed by Clemson at 184.5, Miami is fifth with 155.5, New Mexico is sixth with 55, Cincinnati is seventh with 42, and Evansville is eighth with 28.
"We were ok," Indiana head swimming coach Dorsey Tierney said. "We had good 500, our 200 IM were ok, and our relays were pretty poor. We just got a little bit out of our game plan on those, but all and all it was a fairly solid day. I think when you are swimming pretty tired and sometimes you get out of your game plan a little bit, and you see competition that maybe isn't swimming as tired as you. But obviously shouldn't affect your performance. I think we will get better every session."
Indiana got out of the gates slow finishing fifth in the 200 free relay. The team of senior Anne Williams, junior Meghan Medendorp, and sophomores Erin Smith and Tammy Kostner. Indiana's B relay picked up 10th with a time of 1:38.60.
It didn't take the women long to recoup though as juniors Sarah Fiden, Brooke Taflinger and Erin Gorlesky went 1-2-3 in the 500 free. Fiden's time of 4:52.65, Taflinger's time of 4:54.39, and Gorlesky's time of 4:55.30 were all season bests. The freshman tandem of Lauren Torpey and Doherty Colgin placed sixth and seventh respectively for the IU.
"Our 200 free relay, we really had poor starts, which of course affects everything in that race," Tierney said. "I thought the 500 swimmers did a nice job, they brought us back into the meet. Anytime you have the type of competitors that were in that with Brooke Taflinger, Erin Gorlesky, Sarah Fiden, and our two freshmen in Doherty (Colgin) and Lauren (Torpey), good things will happen."
Senior Jenny Bechem and freshman Lauren Lubus place 10th and 13th, respectively; to give the Hoosiers some much needed points. Both swam season bests as Bechem went 4:58.60 and Lubus went 5:01.14.
Freshman Kristen Bradley swam her season best in the 200 IM placing fourth the Indiana. Bradley went 2:05.92, which is a season best for any Hoosier. Taflinger continued to gather points for Indiana as she placed sixth at 2:06.11. Senior Kristy Martin finished eighth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.83. Senior Maggie Helmers won the bonus heat for the Hoosiers with a time of 2:08.68.
"I think they did a real nice job for us tonight," Tierney said of her freshmen. "Freshmen tend to get a little better as the season goes along. I think they are adjusting to the training program. They are learning how to race competitively when they are a little tired, which is kind of a trick. I am very pleased. I expect them to continue to get better. What they did today wasn't necessarily a surprise for us. They have worked their way towards that."
Medendorp came off a disappointing morning swim to place 10th overall and second in the consolation heat with a time of 24.09 in the 50 freestyle. Kostner was right on her teammates heals coming in 11th with a time of 24.26. Smith came in 16th for Indiana at 24.42.
Junior Cassandra Carindell had a good day diving for the Hoosiers. Cardinell paced the Hoosiers as she placed second on the one-meter with a score of 285.60 and seventh on the three-meter.
"Cassie did a real nice job on one-meter," Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. "I was pleased with that although it wasn't a personal best, it was still a very good performance."
Senior All-American Sara Hildebrand had a scare on the one-meter when she slipped off the board. Hildebrand found back though and gutted it out to placed ninth in the event. Fellow senior Lori Matthys placed 10th on both the three-meter and the one-meter.
"We are fortunate," said. "Sara is ok after she slipped off the board. Something like that can be pretty serious. Usually you wind up getting 20 stitches in the leg, fortunately she is ok. Give her credit for coming back and finishing ninth on one-meter. Lori Matthys has improved so much. She was just a little bit off on a few things, so we wasn't quite were she wanted be, but I think tomorrow she will probably final in both events."
The women capped the day by finishing sixth in the 400 medley relay. The team of Kostner, senior Megan Geers, Smith, and Medendorp came in with a time of 3:53.88. Indiana's B relay finished 11th with a time of 3:57.39.
The Hoosiers will return to action tomorrow for the second day of the Indiana Invitational. The morning session is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the night session at 6:00 p.m.
