Hoosiers Complete Preliminaries of the Invite
Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana women’s swimming team completed the preliminaries of the 50 free, 200 IM and the 500 free. The Hoosiers placed five girls in the finals of the 500 free and three in the finals of the 200 IM.Juniors Brooke Taflinger, Sarah Fiden and Erin Gorlesky, and freshmen Lauren Torpey and Doherty Colgin all qualified for the finals of the 500 free. Taflinger is the second seed in the finals after season best swim of 4:56.94. Fiden is seeded fourth after a time of 4:57.39. Torpey, Colgin and Gorlesky are sixth, seventh and eighth with times of 4:58.71, 4:59.14, and 5:00.63, respectively, after the morning swims.
Senior Jenny Bechem and freshman Lauren Lubus will represent the Hoosiers in the consolation heat of the 500 freestyle. Bechem went 5:06.47 in her preliminary swim, while Lubus went 5:07.31.
Senior Kristy Martin, freshman Kristy Bradley, and Taflinger are the three Hoosiers set to compete in the finals of the 200 IM. All three girls swam season bests on their way to the finals. Taflinger is seeded fifth with a time of 2:06.24, followed by Bradley at seven with a time of 2:06.69, and Martin in eighth at 2:07.36.
Indiana had a contingent of six qualify for the bonus heat of the 200 IM. The group consists of senior Maggie Helmers and Colleen McCracken, sophomore Erin Smith, and freshmen Nina Thurston, Lauren Lubus, and Sarah Bugden.
The Hoosiers failed to qualify anyone for the finals of the 50 free, but have three girls in the consolation heat. Sophomores Tammy Kostner and Erin Smith lead the group at the third and fifth spot, respectively. Both went season bests with Kostner going 24.25 followed by Smith at 24.27. Junior Meghan Medendorp is seventh in the consolation heat at 24.33.
Senior Anne Williams was the only Hoosiers to make the bonus heat of the 50 free. Her time of 24.41 tied a season best.
The Hoosiers will return to the pool at 6:00 p.m. today for the finals, consoles and bonus heats of the 50 free, 500 free and the 200 IM. The 200 free relay and 400 medley relay will also take place tonight.
