Hoosiers Complete Day Two Prelims
Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana women's swimming team completed the second day of prelims at the 2002 Indiana Invitational. The Hoosiers qualified three for the finals of the 400 IM, five for the 200 free, one for each of the 100 fly and 100 back finals.Junior Brooke Taflinger leads the Hoosiers contingent in the 400 IM as she is seeded second. Taflinger won her heat with a time of 4:24.62. Freshman Kristen Bradley and junior Erin Gorlesky round out the Hoosier lineup in the 400 IM finals. Bradley, like Taflinger, won her heat with a time of 4:27.73, while Gorlesky went 4:29.00 in her preliminary swim.
Seniors Kristy Martin and Maggie Helmers along with freshman Lauren Lubus will represent IU in the consolation heat of the 400 IM . Martin just missed out on making the finals qualifying ninth in the prelims. She went 4:30.59, only 31 hundredths short of the eighth spot. Helmers went 4:31.65 in her prelim, while Lubus went 4:32.45.
Like they did in the 500 free yesterday, Indiana dominated the preliminary competition in the 200 free. IU placed five girls in the finals heat led by freshman Doherty Colgin, who is seeded third after going 1:53.41 in her prelim. Sophomore Erin Smith and freshman Nina Thurston qualified fourth and fifth with prelim times of 1:53.57 and 1:53.75, respectively. Juniors Sarah Fiden and Erin Gorlesky round out IU's group of 200 freestyle swimmers in the finals. Fiden and Gorlesky went matching 1:53.86's in their preliminary swims.
Taflinger and senior Anne Williams were the two Hoosiers that qualified for the consolation heat of the 200 free. Taflinger finished 12th in prelims with a time of 1:54.10, while Williams finished 13th with a time of 1:54.30.
Juniors Meghan Medendorp and Jillian Lathrop, sophomores Tammy Kostner and Jinji Fraser and freshmen Lauren Tropey and Lauren Lubus will take part in the bonus heat of the 200 free for the Hoosiers.
Smith was the only Hoosiers to qualify for the finals of the 100 fly. She went 57.66 in her preliminary swim. Colgin and senior Colleen McCracken both made the consolation heat of the 100 fly. Colgin went 58.34 in prelims, while McCracken went 58.58. Martin, Lubus and Lathrop will all swim the bonus heat of the 100 fly.
Indiana also qualified only one swimmer for the 100 back finals as Kostner went a season best 58.09 to pick up the seventh seed. McCracken qualified for the consolation heat of the 100 back as well after a 59.50 prelim time.
The lone event on the day that Indiana did not qualify any for the finals was the 100 breast. Taflinger and senior Megan Geers will represent the Hoosiers in the consolation heat of the100 breast. Geers went 1:07.52 in her prelim swim, while Taflinger went 1:07.85. Medendorp, Bradley and Martin all made the bonus heat of the 100 breast for IU.
The Hoosiers will return to the pool tonight at 6:00 p.m. at the Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatic Center. IU will look to increase its slim 16-point lead over second place Tennessee.
