Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana women's swimming and diving teams extended their lead in the Indiana Invitational. The Hoosiers used a spectacular swim in the 400 IM by junior Brooke Taflinger and the 800 free relays going 2-3 to increase the lead. The Hoosiers lead the pack with 529.5 points followed by Clemson at 448, Tennessee at 433, Arkansas at 416, Miami at 310.5, Cincinnati at 164, New Mexico at 101, and Evansville with 66 points.
"I thought we swam better today," Indiana head swimming coach Dorsey Tierney said. "Our relays were better, we still need to get those starts down. The 800 free relay, I split them up a little bit. We are so deep in the 200 free, I never know what people to put where because they are all very effective. We managed to put up three good relays."
For the second straight evening, the Hoosiers got off to a slow start placing sixth and eighth in the 200 medley relay. The Hoosiers' A team consisting of sophomore Tammy Kostner, senior Megan Geers, sophomore Erin Smith and junior Megan Medendorp finished sixth overall with a time of 1:47.43. The Hoosiers' B relay of senior Colleen McCracken, Taflinger, freshman Doherty Colgin and senior Anne Willliams won the first heat of the 200 medley relay and finished eighth overall with a time of 1:48.77.
Taflinger came out and won the very next event, the 400 individual medley in a season best time of 4:18. 93. The time is among the top ten nationally this season. IU also had three girls in the consolation heat with senior Kristy Martin leading the way. Martin won the consolation heat to place ninth overall with a time of 4:27.04. Freshman Lauren Lubus placed 11th overall with a time of 4:29.06, while senior Maggie Helmers came in right behind her at 4:29.27.
"Brooke Taflinger's 400 IM was pretty exceptional tonight that is one of the fastest in the country so far this season," Tierney said. "Erin Gorlesky continues to have a good weekend. All and all things were a little better and relays were better tonight."
Smith remained in the same position she was in after the prelims placing seventh in the 100 fly with a time of 57.44. Colgin placed 10th for IU with a time of 58.18 followed by McCracken in 12th with a time of 58.46. Lubus won the bonus heat of the 100 fly with a season best time of 57.49.

Gorlesky came in with a time of 1:53.08 followed by Colgin at 1:53.20 and Fiden at 1:54.14. Williams and Medendorp were the final to Hoosiers to score in the 200 free placing 12th and 15th, respectively. Freshman Lauren Torpey came out and won the bonus heat with a time of 1:54.43.
