Fiden Sets School Marks as Hoosiers Win Invite

Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana women's swimming and diving team finished off the 2002 Indiana Invitational Sunday at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center in first place with 959.5 points, over 300 points better than Tennessee and Arkansas.
"This was definitely our best day," Indiana head swimming coach Dorsey Tierney said. "We got better everyday, which I thought we would get better every session. Next time around when we have a three day meet, we need to be a little bit more ready to go the first day. All and all, it was a good afternoon. Everybody was faster today."
Indiana's day started with a bang as junior distance freestyler Sarah Fiden broke two school records and garned an NCAA A qualifying time. Fiden eclipsed her own 1000 and 1650 freestyle records during the women's mile. Her time of 16:21.13 was 27 hundredths faster than the school record she set last season and six seconds faster than NCAA A cut. Fiden's first 1000 in the 1650 was 9:54.01, which bettered her own school record set in 2001 by 22 hundredths. As of Nov. 18, the time was the second fastest in the nation this season.
"Sarah definitely did a great job today," Tierney said. "We did something similar to this last year. If you are mentally ready to swim a mile, then good things can happen. It is the first mile she does every year and she is excited about it, and trains hard for it. I think when you're in the right frame of mind, when your able to swim at a nice tempo, relaxed to a certain extent, what happens is what happened today. She set a school record and best time. I am not real surprised about it. She has definitely been training well. It is nice to get an NCAA cut out of the way. That is what the goal was today, and she was able to accomplish that."
Freshman Lauren Torpey was right behind her record setting teammate with a time of 16:45.03. Torpey's time was good enough to rank fifth on the Hoosiers all-time top 10. Senior Jenny Bechem and junior Erin Gorlesky rounded out the Hoosiers sweep of the first four spots. Bechem's time of 16:45.68 is a career best and ranks sixth on Indiana's all-time top 10 list, while Gorleksy's 16:46.25 ranks seventh. Freshman Doherty Colgin placed sixth in the event with a time of 17:06.11.
Indiana showed its strength in diving as well as the trio of junior Cassandra Cardinell, senior Sara Hildebrand and senior Lori Matthys went 1-2-3. Cardinell won the event with a score of 450.10 followed by Hildebrand with 442.85. Matthys was third with a score of 404.75. Both Matthys' and Cardinell's performances were career bests.
The Hoosier quartet of sophomore Tammy Kostner, freshman Sarah Bugden, senior Colleen McCracken and freshman Nina Thurston placed 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively, in the 200 backstroke. Kostner (2:07.03), Bugden (2:07.14) and Thurston (2:07.92) all came away with season best times in the event.
Junior Meghan Medendorp and senior Anne Williams went 4-7 in the 100 freestyle event. Medendorp finished with a time of 52.36, while Williams finished at 52.43. Sophomore Erin Smith finished second in the consolation heat of the 100 free and 10th overall with a season best time of 52.55. Thurston placed 15th in the event with a time of 53.54.
Junior Brooke Taflinger placed second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:19.49. Freshman Kristen Bradley placed fifth in the event with a time of 2:23.72. Bradley's time was a season best by nearly two seconds. Senior Kristy Martin won the consolation heat of the 200 breast and placed ninth overall with a season best time of 2:23.88. Senior Maggie Helmers placed 11th at 2:25.79, while senior Megan Geers finished 15th with a time of 2:27.86.
Martin followed up her heat win by placing third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.61. Bechem was the Hoosiers second highest finisher at sixth with a time of 2:05.58. Taflinger continued to show her versatility as she placed seventh with a time of 2:06.59. Freshman Lauren Lubus (2:05.32), Smith (2:05.71), junior Jillian Lathrop (2:07.41), Helmers (2:08.73) and Gorlesky (2:08.82) placed 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th in the 200 fly. Budgen continued her solid day by winning the bonus heat of the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.53. The time was her second season best of the day.
"One of our freshmen, Sarah Bugden had a great day," Tierney said. "It was kind of a break out day for her. It was nice to see."
The Hoosiers finished the day by placing second and sixth in the 400 free relay. Indiana's A squad of Medendorp, Williams, Thurston and Smith went 3:28.91 to finish behind Arkansas. The Hoosiers' B relay consisting of sophomore Jinji Fraser, Kostner, Lubus and Colgin went 3:34.18 to finish sixth.
The Hoosiers will return to action Thursday Dec. 5 through Saturday Dec. 7 when they travel to the US Open in Minneapolis, Minn. and the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio. The team will split up between the two events.
