IU Drops Dual Meets

Lawrenceville & New Brunswick, NJ - The IU wrestling team hit the road for its first dual meets of the season against Rider and Rutgers over the weekend. Despite a strong showing at the season-opening Missouri Open, the Hoosiers were not able to find team victory on the east coast.
Saturday, Nov. 30 opened with the Hoosiers facing off against Rider. The Broncos ended successfully by a score of 22-13. IU's Coyte Cooper (Anacortes, Wash.) earned a 14-8 decision over Rider's Mike Molosky at the 141 pound weight class. Cooper extended his season record to 4-1 with the win. At 197 Pat DeGain (Clarkston, Mich.) recorded a major decision over Bronco grappler Jared Terrell with a score of 15-6, extending his record to 5-0 on the year. Rounding out the victorious individual Hoosiers was Joe Dubuque (Bloomfield, NJ/Glen Ridge) at 125. Dubuque had the only pin of the meet when he pinned Jim DiCicco 6:18 into the match.
At heavyweight, Ty Matthews lost a close match to Vinny D'Agostino by a score of 4-3.

The day continued as the team traveled to New Brunswick and Rutgers for its second dual meet of the evening. The Hoosiers held the lead against the Scarlet Knights, winning the first two matches. At 133, Greg Schaefer defeated Andrew Tilles, 10-9 while Cooper defeated Jon Rodriquez, 20-8. Rutgers went on to win the next four successive matches. Andy Rios (Strongsville, Ohio/Lakewood St. Edwards) interrupted the Knights' victories, winning 10-9 over Rudy Medini on a late escape. DeGain lost his first match of the season to Ryan McGrath, 2-1. McGrath entered the match after winning the Navy Classic last weekend.
IU needed to win the next two matches to win the meet. The Hoosiers would need a decision and a pin they could not find. Despite Ty Matthews' (Jerome, Idaho) 9-6 decision over Frank Sabatino and Dubuque's 22-10 win over Marc Rosenfeld, the Hoosiers lost 19-17 to Rutgers.

Rider won its first meet over a Big Ten team since defeating Ohio State in the 1998-99 season while Rutgers got its first ever win over a Big Ten opponent.
IU wrestlers next travel to the Northern Iowa Open on Dec. 7 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
