Hoosiers Travel to US Open and Miami Invite

Bloomington, Ind.- The No. 13 Hoosiers will divide the team up and travel to the U.S. Open and the Miami Invitational. The Hoosiers will take 11 swimmers to the U.S. Open in Minneapolis, Minn. and the other 11 swimmers and three divers to the Miami Invite in Oxford, Ohio. Both events will take place Thursday, Dec. 5 through Saturday, Dec. 7. The Miami Invite will have finals Thursday at 6:00 p.m. and have prelims at 9:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The pool at Miami will be the host of the NCAA Diving Regionals in mid March.
Travel Rosters
Head Coach Dorsey Tiereny will take 11 swimmers to the U.S. Open. Former Hoosier standout Susan Woessner will also travel with Indiana and compete as part of Indiana Aquatics. The other 11 swimmers will travel with Assistant coach Ron Turner and volunteer assistant Louisa Raisbeck to the Miami Invitational. The three Hoosier divers to travel to the Miami Invite with head coach Jeff Huber and Diving Events Coordinator Jason Baumann.

Previewing US Open
The field for the US Open will include some of the top swimmers in the world. The Open will be Olympic distance (lcm) for the first time since 1999. Over 500 athletes are scheduled to swim at the event. 2000 Olympic gold medalist Misty Hyman and three-time Olympic gold medalist Brooke Bennett are just a few of the names competing. Several US National Team members will also be competing this weekend. The event is schedule for Thursday, Dec. 5 through Saturday, Dec. 7.

Previewing Miami
The field for the Miami Invitational will be comprised of 14 teams, including the Hoosiers. Also competing at the Invite will be Miami (Ohio), Cincinnati, Oberlin College, Wright State, Illinois, Kenyon College, John Hopkins, Carnegie-Mellon, Western Kentucky, Toledo, Wheeling Jesuit, Lewis, Emory and Illinois State (just drivers). The meet will begin on Thursday, Dec. 5, with finals at 6:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday will begin with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.

Record Breakers Part Two
Last Season, the Hoosiers set 12 school records and nine diving marks. This season has been no different for Indiana.
In the Indiana Invitational, junior Sarah Fiden broke her own school marks in the 1000 free and the 1650 free. During the 1650, Fiden went 9:54.01 over her first 1000 to eclipse her old mark by 22 hundredths. She kept up the pace and rewrote the 1650 record she had previously held by 27 hundredths of a second at 16:21.13.
Senior All-American Sara Hildebrand topped her own school mark on the one-meter during the Hoosiers first dual meet of the year. Her scored of 323.48 topping her old mark by nearly 12 points.
Recapping the Indiana Invitational
The Hoosiers won the Indiana Invitational title with a scored of 959.5. Indiana won the event by nearly 300 points over Tennessee and Arkansas.
Junior Sarah Fiden led the way for the Hoosiers as she set two school records in winning two events. Fiden set school records in the 1000 free and 1650 free. During the 1650, she swam a 1000 free time of 9:54.01, and capped off the swim with a time of 16:21.13. Both broke her own school records. Fiden also swam a season best time of 4:52.65 in the 500 free.
The Hoosiers distance freestyler continued their dominant ways, placing 1-2-3-6-7 in the 500 free and 1-2-3-4-6 in the 1650 free. The Hoosiers 800 free relay teams went 2-3 as well. Junior Brooke Taflinger placed second behind Fiden in the 500, while junior Erin Gorlesky finished third. Freshmen Doherty Colgin and Lauren Torpey came in sixth and seventh, respectively for the Hoosiers. In the 1650, Torpey followed Fiden for second, while senior Jenny Bechem and Gorlesky came in third and fourth. Torpey's, Bechem's and Gorlesky's times were all NCAA B qualifying cuts, while Fiden's was an A cut.
In the 800 free relay, Indiana's A team of Colgin, Fiden, Gorlesky and sophomore Erin Smith finished second with a time of 7:31.58. Indiana's B team of Taflinger, Torpey, freshman Nina Thurston and senior Anne Williams placed third at 7:32.67.
Taflinger wasn't done there as she won the 400 individual medley with a season best time of 4:18.93. Freshman Kristen Bradley placed fourth in the event with a time of 4:25.24. Bradley also placed fourth in the 200 IM with a season best time of 2:05.92, while Taflinger with sixth at 2:06.11. The duo was also the Hoosiers top two representatives in the 200 breast as Taflinger placed second at 2:19.49 and Bradley went 2:23.72 to placed fifth.
Indiana had a solid continent in the 200 free as well placing 3-4-6-7-8. Smith led the way with a season best time of 1:52.60. Thurston was fourth, followed by Gorlesky, Colgin and Fiden in sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively.
The Hoosiers got a scare in diving when senior All-American slipped off the one-meter during competition. She walked away with a pulled muscle in her leg. Junior Cassandra Cardinell was the Hoosiers top diver on the one-meter and three-meter placing second and seventh, respectively. Cardinell, Hildebrand and senior Lori Matthys went 1-2-3 on the platform. Cardinell's and Matthys' scores of 450.10 and 404.75 were career bests.
Big Ten Swimmer of the Week
Junior Meghan Medendorp was selected Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for her performance against the Northwestern Wildcats. Medendorp was a quadruple winner in helping the Hoosiers defeat the Wildcats, 168-123. She won the 50 free, the 100 free and was part of both the 200 free and 200 medley relays that won. In the 50 and 100 freestyle events, the Hartland, Wis., native swam season best times of 23.98 (50 free) and 51.50 (100 free). The 200 free relay time of 134.94 and the 200 medley relay time of 1:46.63 are season bests for the Hoosiers as well.
Northwestern Recap
The Hoosiers returned home to the friendly confines of Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center, and picked up a 168-123 win on Parents Weekend over Northwestern. IU was led junior sprinter Meghan Medendorp, who ended the day as a quadruple winner.
Medendorp won both the 50 free and the 100 free in season best time. Her 50 time was 23.98, which tied at season best, and her 100 time was 51.50, which was a season best. She also swam the anchor legs on the 200 medley and 200 free relays that swam season bests.
Sophomores Tammy Kostner and Erin Smith were on both the winning relays, while senior Megan Geers was part of the medley relay and senior Anne Williams was part of the free relay.
The Hoosiers distance events came up big against the Wildcats as the Hoosiers went 1-2-3 in the 1000 free and the 500 free. Junior Sarah Fiden won the 1000 free with a time of 10:05.99, while freshman Lauren Torpey and junior Erin Gorlesky came in second and third respectively. In the 500 free, Gorlesky came in first with a season best time of 4:56.97 followed by Fiden in second and Torpey in third.
Senior Colleen McCracken and freshman Doherty Colgin each won events for the Hoosiers. McCracken won the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.83, while Colgin took top billing in the 200 free at 1:52.54. Junior Brooke Taflinger and freshman Kristen Bradley took the top two spots in the 400 IM. Taflinger edged out Bradley for the win by 21 hundredths of a second.
Indiana divers continued to roll as they took the top three spots in both the one-meter and three-meter events. Senior Sara Hildebrand won the three-meter event, while junior Cassandra Cardinell took top honors on the one-meter. Senior Lori Matthys took second in both events for the Hoosiers.
Out Distancing the Competition
The Hoosiers freestyle distance swimmers have definitely done their job in the Hoosiers first four meets. In the 1000 free event, the Hoosiers have gone 1-2-3 in three of the four meets. Junior Sarah Fiden leads the Hoosiers charge as she has won the 1000 free in all four dual meets this season. Her time of 9:59.65 ranks 14th in the nation to date. The group of juniors Erin Gorlesky and Brooke Taflinger, and freshmen Doherty Colgin and Lauren Torpey have also helped the Hoosiers success.
The distance freestylers have been just as impressive in the 500 free event going 1-2 in all four meets and 1-2-3 in two of the meets. The Hoosiers most impressive showing to date may have come in their last meet against Northwestern. The distance squad went 1-2-3 in both the 1000 and the 500. Fiden won the 1000 followed by Torpey and Gorlesky. In the 500 against the Wildcats, Gorlesky won the event followed by Fiden and Torpey.
Big Ten Diver of the Week
Senior Sara Hildebrand was honored as the Big Ten Diver of the Week for her performance against Notre Dame and Illinois. The Roseville, Minn., native helped the No. 13 Hoosiers down 14th-ranked Notre Dame by winning both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. She went on to win the three-meter event against the Fighting Illini of Illinois on Saturday. In the one-meter against Illinois, Hildebrand finished second behind teammate Cassandra Cardinell. In both events on Saturday, Hildebrand scored over 300 points.
Notre Dame/Illinois Recap
The Hoosiers picked up two road victories last weekend over 14th-ranked Notre Dame on Friday and Illinois on Saturday. Indiana started out the weekend by squeaking by the Irish in 154-146 on the final 400 free relay. The Hoosiers went into the final relay needing a first and third place finish and they got just that. The IU team of freshman Nina Thurston, sophomore Tammy Kostner, junior Meghan Medendorp, and senior Anne Williams won the 400 free relay.
Medendorp also faired well for the Hoosiers in the sprinting events. She won the 100 free and placed second in the 50 free with a time of 23.98.
Junior Brooke Taflinger won the 200 breast event and finished second in the 400 individual medley. Fellow classmate Sarah Fiden picked up wins in both of the distance events. She won the 500 free and the 1000 free.
Seniors Tina Gretlund and Kristy Martin went 1-3 in the 200 fly to help the Hoosiers cause.
Senior All-American Sara Hildebrand won both of the diving events for the Hoosiers. She won the three-meter with a score of 306 points and the one-meter with a mark of 290.70.
The Hoosiers found themselves down by 20 points a third of the way through the meet, but battled back to win on the final relay.
Against Illinois, Indiana once again fell behind early, but battled back to win 178-117.
Fiden led the Hoosiers charge as she once again won both the 500 free and the 1000 free. Indiana went 1-2-3 in the 100 free as Fiden was followed by freshman Doherty Colgin and junior Erin Gorlesky. IU also went 1-2 in the 500 free with junior Taflinger following Fiden.
IU got some important points out of the diving as the Hoosier divers went 1-2-3 in both events. Junior Cassandra Cardinell claimed victory in the on-meter, while Hildebrand won the three-meter event.
Medendorp once again took second in the 50 free and first in the 100 free. The Hoosiers but the meet away going 1-2-3-4 in the 200 butterfly. Senior Kristy Martin won the event with a time of 2:04.82 followed by sophomore Erin Smith. Junior Jillian Lathrop was third and senior Maggie Helmers came in fourth. Smith went on to win the 100 fly by out touching her Illini counterpart by two hundredths of the a second.
Senior Colleen McCracken solid day for the Hoosiers. She finished second in the 100 back and won the 200 back.
The 200 free relay of senior Anne Williams, juniors Meghan Medendorp and Jillian Lathrop, ad sophomore Tammy Kostner closed the meet out with a winning time of 1:37.48.
Returning All-Americans
The Hoosiers return seven swimmers and two divers that earned All-America honors last season. Senior diver Sara Hildebrand (formerly Reiling) returns as the Hoosiers top diver this season. Last season, Hildebrand earned All-America honors in all three diving events. Hildebrand was the Diver of the Year at the Big Ten Championships by virtue of winning the one-meter and platform competitions. Cassandra Cardinell also returns for the Hoosiers. Cardinell earned All-America honors on both the one-meter and platform competition. She was the Hoosiers highest placer on the platform by placing fourth.
The Hoosiers return seniors Tina Gretlund, Anne Williams and Kristy Martin, juniors Sarah Fiden, Meghan Medendorp and Brooke Taflinger, and sophomore Erin Smith all swam legs on the Hoosiers All-America relays. All five relays, the 200, 400, and 800 free relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays, earn All-America honors at the NCAA Championships in 2002. Fiden also earned All-America honors by placing 16th in the 1650 freestyle. Taflinger was the Big Ten champion in the 400 individual medley.
Best Finish
The Hoosiers had their best finish last season at the NCAA Championships finishing in a tie for 10th with Arizona State. The 136 points that Indiana scored at the Championships was also a school record. The 10th place finish was tops among Big Ten schools. Wisconsin was the other top finisher at 14th.
Indiana had a total of 10 All-Americans. Susan Woessner led the Hoosiers by finishing second in the 100 backstroke and ninth in the 200 backstroke. All five of Indiana's relays finished with All-America honors.
Diving Success continues
For the fifth consecutive season, Dr. Jeff Huber was selected the national coach of the year. U.S. Diving presented Huber with the Mike Peppe Award as the nations outstanding diving coach.
This past July, at the 2002 U.S. Outdoor National Championships in Dallas, Indiana won the combined team championship for the ninth consecutive time and the women's team title for the fifth year. In all, Indiana University placed four divers on the national team.
Record Breakers
The Hoosiers had a record season this past seasons last year with swimming eclipsing 12 school records and diving setting nine. Senior diver Sara Hildebrand set all nine diving records for the Hoosiers.
Junior Brooke Taflinger set the 200 breast and 400 IM school records, while junior Sarah Fiden topped the 500 and 1650 free records. Indiana broke four relay school records in 2002.
Cream and Crimson/Evansville Recap
The Hoosiers opened up the season with the intrasquad Cream and Crimson meet. The meet came down to the final relay, and the Cream came out victorious, 98-87. With the Cream squad clinging to a 85-83 advantage, the 400 free relay team of senior Maggie Helmers, juniors Brooke Taflinger and Jillian Lathrop and freshman Kristen Bradley came out victorious to preserve the Cream win.
Taflinger was a triple-winner to lead the way for the Cream. She won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.96 and the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.30, along with being a part of the 400 free relay.
Sophomore Erin Smith and senior Anne Williams also picked up individual wins for the women's cream squad. Smith edged Williams in the 50 free, while Williams won the 100 free with a time of 52.90.
Senior Kristy Martin was a double winner for the Crimson squad. She won the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.89 and swam the butterfly leg of the winning 400 medley relay. Freshman Doherty Colgin won the 200 free for the Crimson with a time of 1:53.67. Sophomore Erin Gorlesky won the 500 free and senior Tina Gretlund won the 200 breast stroke for the Crimson squad.
Indiana opened up the regular season schedule with a 185.5-103.5 win over Evansville. The Hoosiers won all 16 events, including going 1-2 in 15 of the 16 events.
All-American senior diver Sara Hildebrand eclipsed her own school record in the one-meter diving with a score of 323.48. Fellow senior Lori Matthys won the three-meter diving event with Hildebrand coming in second.
Junior Meghan Medendorp led the way for the Hoosiers as a quadruple winner. Medendorp was a part of both the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay. Individually, she won both sprinting events, the 50 free and 100 free.
Indiana had six double winners on the day. Senior Colleen McCracken was part of the winning 200 medley relay and also won the 200 backstroke. Senior Megan Geers won the 100 breast and swam the breaststroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay. Juniors Sarah Fiden and Brooke Taflinger each picked up two individual wins. Fiden won both the 500 and 1000 free, while Taflinger won the 200 free and 200 breast. Sophomores Erin Smith and Tammy Kostner each swam a leg on the winning 200 free relay. Kostner also won the 100 backstroke and Smith swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay.
