Hoosiers Earn Four National Cuts at US Open

Minneapolis, Minn.- The Indiana women's swimming team traveled to the US Open in Minneapolis, Minn. on Thursday to begin a three-day competition that included some of the best swimmers in the world. The Hoosiers recorded 10 season bests and earned four National cut times in the process.
The Hoosiers 800-meter freestyle relay capped off a good day for Indiana as it placed second. The team of senior Tina Gretlund, juniors Erin Gorlesky and Sarah Fiden and sophomore Erin Smith went 8:27.86 to earn IU's four National cut time of the day. Indiana won its heat, but fell second behind Sun Devil Aquatics 'A' in the time final. The Sun Devil team went 8:24.67.
Junior Brooke Taflinger led the way for the Hoosiers as she placed fifth in the 200-meter individual medley. The Kokomo, Ind., native went 2:21.64 in the morning session to earn the third seed going into the night session. She went 2:20.61 during her finals swim to take fifth. The time was in long course meters, which is the official Olympic distance, once converted to short course yards is a time of 2:03.73. The time is a season best for Taflinger as well as an NCAA B-cut. The time of 2:20.61 was a National Cut time and fell just 12 hundredths of a second short of an Olympic Trail cut time.
Gretlund and fellow senior Kristy Martin made it a strong showing for the Hoosiers in the 200-metere IM with 10th and 12th place finishes, respectively. Gretlund upped her time from 2:22.68 in the morning to 2:21.70 in the night finishing second in Final B. The time converted to short course yards was 2:04.69, which was also a season best. Martin, like Taflinger and Gretlund, swam a season best time in placing fourth in Final B. She went 2:23.27 during the finals session, which converts to a time of 2:06.34 in short course yards. Senior Maggie Helmers swam a season best time in placing 28th in prelims. Her time of 2:25.38 converted to a 2:07.93 in short course yards.
The Hoosiers also had three girls in the finals of the 400-meter freestyle. Senior Jenny Bechem ripped off a career best time in placing 11th overall and third in Final B. Bechem's time of 4:20.69 converted to 500 short course yards is 4:51.97. The time was a season best for the Hoosiers . Gorlesky won Final C with Fiden placing fifth. Gorlesky's time of 4:21.65 converted to 500 short course yards was 4:53.04, which was a season best for her. Gorlesky's and Bechem's times were NCAA B cut qualifying marks as well as National Cut times. Taflinger placed 41st in the event with a prelim swim of 4:27.18.
Junior Meghan Medendorp finished 15th overall and seventh in Final B of the 50-meter freestyle. After her preliminary swim, Medendorp was ranked 12th thanks to her season best time. Her prelim time of 26.82 converted to short course yards was 23.60, while her finals time of 27.07 converted was 23.82. Erin Smith finished 36th after a prelim swim of 27.54. The time converted to short course yards was a season best at 24.23. Senior Anne Williams placed 53rd after a prelim swim of 27.89, which converted to a 24.54.
Senior Megan Geers was the only Hoosiers to swim the 100-meter breaststroke and placed 56th with a time of 1:18.50. Geers also swam the 200-meter individual medley and finished 62nd with a time of 2:31.38.
The Hoosiers will return to action tomorrow with prelims starting at 9:00 a.m. and finals to follow at 6:00 p.m. The events list for tomorrow includes the 100-meter backstroke, the 200-meter freestyle, the 100-meter butterfly, the 400-meter individual medley and the 400-meter medley relay.
