Hoosiers Win Three Individual Titles at Miami Invite

Oxford, Ohio- The Indiana women's swimming and diving team that traveled to the Miami Invitational remained in third after day two of competition. The Hoosiers were led by three individual titles in the 200 free, the 400 IM and three-meter diving.
Kenyon leads the event with 820.5 points followed by Illinois in second with 765 points. The Hoosiers are third for the second day with 731.5 points. The next closest team to those three is Miami (Ohio) with 600.5 points.
The Hoosiers finished 5th and 14th in the 200 freestyle relay to begin the second day of finals. Indiana's 'A' team of sophomores Tammy Kostner and Jinji Fraser, junior Jillian Lathrop and freshman Doherty Colgin placed fifth with a time of 1:38.40. Freshmen Sarah Bugden, Lauren Lubus and Lauren Torpey along with senior Colleen McCracken comprised Indiana's 'B' relay that finished 14th with a time of 1:40.52.
Lubus got the Hoosiers on the right track by placing second in the 200 fly. Her time of 2:02.51was a season best as well as an NCAA B-cut time. She qualified fourth in prelims with a time of 2:06.57. Lathrop and Bugden went 10-11 in the B Final. The duo was only separated by four hundredths of a second. Bugden and Lathrop earned spots in the B Final with times of 2:10.12 and 2:10.22, respectively
Colgin continued the freshman onslaught for the Hoosiers as she won the 200 freestyle with a season best time of 1:51.95. The Mountain Brook, Ala. native was third after the prelims with a time of 1:53.46. Freshmen Nina Thurston and Lauren Torpey and sophomore Jinji Fraser represented the Hoosiers in the B Final. Thurston, Torpey and Fraser placed 10th, 11th and 18th , respectively. Thurston went 1:52.82 in the final, while Torpey went a season best 1:54.33. Fraser went a season best during her preliminary swim in going 1:55.24.
Freshman Kristen Bradley and sophomore Tammy Kostner qualified for the C Final, but opted out to concentrate on their other events. In prelims, Bradley went 1:56.59 in placing 20th , while Kostner was 24th at 1:57.84.
Bradley was lone Hoosiers to swim the 100 breaststroke and won the C Final. She was 19th overall with a season best time of 1:07.75. The Lindsay, Ontario native was 25th after prelims with a time of 1:09.48.
Kostner earned the Hoosiers best finish in the 100 backstroke placing second in a season and career best time of 57.64. Senior Colleen McCracken was next placing fifth with a time of 58.97. The pair qualified third and ninth, respectively, in prelims to make the A Final of the 100 back. After just missing the A Final of the 100 back, Bugden won the B Final. Her time of 59.21 was a season best and placed her 10th overall. Torpey and Thurston finished fourth and sixth in the C Final of the 100 backstroke. Torpey came in with a time of 1:00.91 to place 22nd overall, while Thurston finished 24th overall at 1:01.20.
Indiana had its strongest conginent in the 400 individual medley as three freshmen were in the A Final. Bradley led the way as she won the event with a time of 4:25.02. Lubus and Thurston were not far behind in fifth and sixth, respectively. Lubus' time of 4:28.92 was a season best. The trio were 2-4-5 after prelims. Bradley had a time of 4:28.04 in prelims followed by Thurston and Lubus at 4:30.69 and 4:30.78, respectively. Thurston's prelim time was a season best.
In the 50 free, Kostner had another strong performance as she placed fourth with a season best time of 24.12. She was sixth in prelims with a time of 24.37. Lathrop won the C Final placing 19th overall with a season best of 24.55. Colgin's time of 25.10 was a season best and placed her 24th overall. Fraser placed 29th in prelims with a time of 25.20. Lubus and McCracken were 37th and 55th, respectively, in the 50 free prelims.
Indiana got a boost from diving as well as the senior duo of Sara Hildebrand and Lori Matthys went 1-2 on the three-meter. Hildebrand won the event with a score of 531.45, while Matthys had a career best at 448.70.
The Hoosiers capped the day placing seventh in the 400 medley relay. The team of Kostner, Bradley, Lubus and Colgin came in with a time of 3:57.74.
The Miami Invitational will enter its final day tomorrow with prelims at 9:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m. The list of events to be competed on Saturday include the 200 medley relay, the 200 backstroke, the 500 free, the 100 butterfly, the 200 breast, the 100 free, the 200 individual medley, three-meter diving, one-meter diving and the 400 free relay.
