Taflinger Earns Olympic Trail Cut at US Open

Minneapolis, Minn.- The Indiana women's swimming team that traveled to the US Open in Minneapolis, Minn. continued its strong showing. The Hoosiers finished day two with six season bests and on Olympic Trial cut time from junior Brooke Taflinger.
Taflinger once again led the way for Indiana as she finished third in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:53.71. The time was good enough for an Olympic Trial cut time as well as an NCAA B-cut time. The converted time from long course meters to short course yards is 4:19.93. Taflinger qualified third after prelims by going 4:57.07, which converted was 4:22.90.
Senior Kristy Martin finished 12th in the 400 IM with a time of 5:02.32, which converts to a 4:27.55. Martin was 12th after her prelim swim of 5:03.45 ,converted to a 4:28.55. Senior Tina Gretlund was 21st after prelims, but opted out of the C Final. Gretlund went 5:07.17, which converted is a 4:31.84. Junior Erin Gorleksy was not far behind Gretlund coming in at 5:09.11, which convert to a 4:33.56. Senior Maggie Helmers was the final Hoosier swimmer in the 400 IM as she placed 31st with a time of 5:10.33, which converts to a 4:34.64.
Gretlund finished 14th in the 100 butterlfy with a time of 1:04.21. The converted time was a 57.14. Gretlund went a season best time of 56.75, converted, in her prelim swim to qualify for the B Final at 16th overall. Senior Jenny Bechem went 32nd in prelims with a time of 1:05.06, which converted to a 57.57. Martin was 42nd at 1:05.40, which converts to a season best time of 57.87. Senior Maggie Helmers also went a season best in finishing 49th. Her time of 1:06.32 converts to a 58.69.
Gorlesky was the top Hoosier to place in the 200-meter freestyle. The Fort Wayne, Ind. native finished 25th with a time of 2:07.10. The time converted was a season best time of 1:52.48. Gorlesky qualified for the C Final by placing 22nd overall in prelims with a time of 2:07.12, which converts to 1:52.50. Junior Sarah Fiden placed 35th with a time of 2:07.73. The time converted was a season best at 1:53.04. Sophomore Erin Smith was 71st at 2:09.84, converted to a 1:54.90. Taflinger, senior Anne Williams and junior Meghan Medendorp rounded out the Hoosier contingent at 80th, 84th and 86th, respectively.
The US Open will begin its final day on Saturday with prelims at 9:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m. The list of events to be competed tomorrow include the 800-meter freestyle, the 100-meter freestyle, the 200-meter breaststroke, the 200-meter butterfly and the 400-meter freestyle relay.
