Indiana Takes Third at Miami Invite

Oxford, Ohio- The Indiana women's swimming team placed third in the Miami Invitational. Freshman Doherty Colgin picked up her second individual title of the Invite by winning the 500 freestyle as the distance freestyle led the way for IU. The Hoosiers placed four girls in the final of the 500 free.
Illinois won the team title with 1,453 points. The Hoosiers were third with 1,307. Kenyon separated the Big Ten schools as they were second with 1,388.
In the 500 free, Colgin and fellow freshman Lauren Torpey went 1-2. Colgin qualified first in the event during prelims and made it stand as she went a season best 4:57.37. Torpey also set a season best as she went 4:58.71. Freshmen Kristen Bradley and Nina Thurston made it a sweep of Hoosier freshmen in the finals as Bradley placed fifth and Thurston finished eighth. Bradley bettered her season best set in the prelims by going 5:03.58 in the finals. Thurston went 5:06.11 in the finals, but set a season best in the prelims at 5:04.51.
The Hoosiers got an equally strong contingent in the 200 backstroke as sophomore Tammy Kostner, senior Colleen McCracken and freshman Sarah Bugden all placed among the top eight. Kostner was the Hoosiers top finishers as she came in second with a season best time of 2:05.23. McCracken wasn't far behind as she placed fifth going 3:06.82. Bugden was eighth in the A Final at 2:09.61. Torpey finished 12th in the event with a season best time of 2:08.74.
Indiana started the day placing sixth in the 200 medley relay. McCracken, freshmen Kristen Bradley and Lauren Lubus and Kostner comprised the team that went 1:49.38.
Lubus wasn't done there as she improved upon her fifth place qualification in prelims to finish fourth with a season best time of 57.16 in the 100 butterfly. The time ranks eighth on the Hoosiers all-time top ten in the 100 butterfly. Junior Jillian Lathrop went a season best time of 58.38 in placing 13th in the 100 butterfly. Colgin and McCracken came in next at 14th and 16th, respectively. McCracken went a season best 58.25 in qualifying 11th in prelims. Sophomore Jinji Fraser wound up 27th after going a season best 59.65 during her preliminary swim. Bugden just missed out on making the finals as she placed 33rd with a season best time of 1:00.00.
Bradley was the Hoosiers lone representative in the 200 breaststroke. The Lindsay, Ontario native finished 16th with a time of 2:28.00. She went 2:27.91 to qualify 17th in her prelim swim.
Fraser was the Hoosiers top finisher in the 100 freestyle placing eighth with a season best time of 52.90. Kostner came in 14th at 53.31, while Lubus placed 17th at 53.78. Kostner's finals swim was a season best, while Lubus went 53.60 in prelims for her season best time. Thurston and Bugden placed 20th and 26th, respectively, after qualifying for the C Final. Bugden set a season best with a time of 54.38 in her final swim.
Indiana placed two girls in the top eight of the 200 individual medley as well. Bradley placed third with a time of 2:06.62 and Lubus was seventh with a season best time of 2:08.89. Thurston was the final Hoosier to place in the 200 IM as she was 15th at 2:11.94.
The Hoosiers wrapped up the meet placing third and 11th in the 400 freestyle relay. Kostner, Thurston, Lubus and Fraser were the Indiana 'A' team that placed third with a time of 3:30.42. Indiana's 'B' team of Colgin, Bugden, Torpey and Lathrop came in 11th at 3:37.54.
The Hoosiers will not be in action again until after Christmas. IU will take their Holiday Training trip to Islamorada, Fla. from Jan. 1 to Jan. 9. Indiana will compete in the Founders Park College Invite on Jan. 3.
