Hoosiers Finish Second at US Open

Minneapolis, Minn.- The Indiana women's swimming team that traveled to the US Open wrapped its third and final day of competition. The Hoosiers earned two National Cut times on Saturday and finished the event tied for second with Minnesota in the Female University category with 139 points. The University of Florida was the team champion with 401 points.
Senior Jenny Bechem continued her stellar weekend at the US Open as she placed fifth in the 200 butterfly. The Naperville, Ill. native went almost identical times in her finals and prelim swims at 2:17.17 and 2:17.16, respectively. The times were National Cuts as well as NCAA B cuts. The conversion times for her finals swim was 2:02.08, while her prelim conversion was a season best 2:02.07.
Senior Kristy Martin had a solid day as she won the C Final of the 200 butterfly. Martin went 2:19.59 in winning the final. Her time converts to 2:04.23 in short course yards. Senior Tina Gretlund placed 29th in prelims with a time of 2:22.94, and fellow classmate Maggie Helmers went 2:24.67 to placed 37th.
Gretlund teamed with senior Anne Williams and juniors Sarah Fiden and Meghan Medendorp to earn a National Cut time in the 400-meter freestyle relay. The Hoosiers quartet finished sixth with a time of 3:55.87. The conversion time to short course yards was a season best 3:27.55.
The Hoosiers got a strong performance from the distance freestyle as IU placed three girls in the top 30 of the 800-meter freestyle. Fiden led the way finishing 10th with a time of 8:58.01. The time converts to a 1000-yard freestyle time of 10:14.94. Bechem was 18th at 9:04.70, and junior Erin Gorlesky was 30th at 9:10.54. Bechem's time converted to a season best of 10:22.59 in the 1000-yard freestyle.
Junior Brooke Taflinger placed fourth in the C Final of the 200 breaststroke and 20th overall. She went 2:42.84 in her final swim for a conversion time of 2:23.29. Taflinger was 24th after her prelim swim of 2:43.60. Martin placed 48th with a time of 2:48.29, while senior Megan Geers was 58th at 2:51.48.
Medendorp was 31st in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 59.58, which converts to 52.43. Williams was 41st at 1:00.01, which converts to 52.80. Fiden went a season best 52.97 conversion time to finish 51st. Sophomore Erin Smith was 66th after going 1:00.56. The time converts to 53.29 in short course yards.
The Hoosiers will not be in action again until after Christmas. IU will take their Holiday Training trip to Islamorada, Fla. from Jan. 1 to Jan. 9. Indiana will compete in the Founders Park College Invite on Jan. 3.
