Cooper First at Northern Iowa Open

Bloomington, Ind. - IU wrestling headed to the Northern Iowa Open for competition against some of the best teams in the Midwest on Sat., Dec. 7.
"We are continuing to develop as a team," said head coach Duane Goldman. "This weekend was a good stepping stone for a lot of individuals. Open tournaments help to develop experience that is critical for success at this level."
141-pounder and No. 7 Coyte Cooper (Anacortes, Wash./Anacortes) extended his winning streak, taking first place honors at 141, defeating Northwestern's John Giacene 3-1 in the finals.
"Coyte wrestled very well," said Goldman. "He is getting close to his old form."
No. 18 and 125 pound Joe Dubuque (Bloomfield, N.J./Glen Ridge) was injured in the semi-final round but had put himself in a position to finish in fourth place regardless of injury.
No. 9 Pat DeGain (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) finished third behind first place and current No. 10 Sean Stender of Northern Iowa after losing to him in the semi-finals.
Rounding out the Hoosiers' top finishers, Greg Schaefer (Evansville, Ind./Mater Dei) took fifth at 133, Brady Richardson (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln) was fifth at 174 and Andy Rios (Strongsville, Ohio/Lakewood St. Edwards) was sixth at 184.
Indiana takes a break from competition until Dec. 21 when it hosts Missouri in its dual meet home-opener at University Gymnasium in Bloomington, Ind.
