Hoosiers Sending Eight Swimmers and Three Divers to NCAA Championship

Two-time Big Ten Conference Swimming Coach of the Year Dorsey Tierney is leading eight swimmers to the 2002 NCAA Championship in Austin, Texas on March 21-23.
Senior Susan Woessner leads the Indiana contingent after she was named the 2002 Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Year. Woessner, a two-time Big Ten Champion, will compete in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events as well as the 50-yard freestyle. She holds the fourth-fastest time in the nation in the 100 back and the eighth-fastest in the 200 back. She was an All-American last season.
Junior Tina Gretlund will compete in the 200- and 400-yard individual medley events as well as the 200-yard butterfly. Gretlund was part of the Hoosiers’ 1-2-3 finish in the 400 IM at the 2002 Big Ten Championship. Gretlund was also an All-American last season.
Sophomore Sarah Fiden will also be competing at the NCAA Championship. Fiden set the school record in the 500- and 1650-yard freestyle events at the 2002 Big Ten Championship and placed second in both events. She was also a All-American in 2001.
Sophomore Brooke Taflinger was invited to the 2002 NCAA Championship and is the reigning Big Ten Champion in the 400-yard individual medley. Taflinger led the 1-2-3 finish in the event at the conference meet. She will not only compete in the 400 IM, but also the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke. She set the school record in the 400 IM and the 200 breast.
Junior Kristy Martin will also be making an appearance at the 2002 NCAA Championship. Martin qualified in the 200- and 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard butterfly. She is making her first appearance at the NCAAs.
Junior Anne Williams also received an invitation to the NCAA Championship. Williams, an All-American in 2001, will compete in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events as well as the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Sophomore Meghan Medendorp and freshman Erin Smith are making their first NCAA Championship appearances. Medendorp qualified in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events as well as a member of the record-setting 400-yard freestyle relay. Smith set the school record in the 100-yard butterfly and will also race in that event. The duo will also compete in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Four-time U.S. Diving Coach of the Year, Dr. Jeff Huber, is also leading a trio of divers to the NCAA Championship after they qualified at the NCAA Zone C Diving meet this past weekend.
Senior Erin Quinn will be heading to Austin after she was victorious on the three-meter springboard at the zone meet. In addition, Quinn also qualified on the one-meter springboard after she placed third. Her fourth-place finish on the 10-meter platform was not quite enough, but she has the option of competing on it in Austin.
Junior Sara Reiling will also be competing at the NCAA Championship after she was victorious on the 10-meter platform. Reiling also qualified on the three-meter with a third-place finish, but was unable to qualify on the one-meter with a seventh-place finish. She does have the option to compete on the one-meter.
Sophomore Cassandra Cardinell was the final IU diver to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet. Cardinell finished second behind Reiling in the 10-meter platform competition, but it was enough to secure her a spot in the competition. She finished eighth on one-meter and 11th on three.
The Hoosiers are looking to continue the success from 2001 when they placed 13th with 90 points. The finish was the best in two decades. The 2002 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship will take place at the Jamail Swimming Center on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin, Texas on March 21-23.
