Hoosiers Place Six on Academic All-Big Ten Team

Bloomington, Ind. - Academic All-Big Ten selections were named for winter sports, and Indiana University had 36 of its student-athletes earn the recognition. Among the Hoosiers to earn Academic All-Big Ten accolades are representatives from the men's and women's basketball teams, the men's swimming and diving teams and the wrestling team.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, the student-athlete must be a letterwinner in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade point average of 3.0 or better.
Leading the way for IU in the classroom were members of the women's swimming and diving team that placed a conference-best 21 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big Ten squad. Junior diver Mamie Goodson (English) and junior swimmer Anne Williams (mathematics education) led the way for the Hoosiers, as both earned Academic All-Conference honors for the second time in their respective careers. Senior diver Sara Reiling (special education) and senior swimmer Susan Woessner (history) earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, as well. Reiling and Woessner have been piling up conference honors all season, with Reiling securing 2002 Big Ten Diver of the Championship recognition and Woessner earning Big Ten Swimmer of the Year honors.
Both the men's swimming and diving team and the wrestling squad placed six representatives on the Academic All-Big Ten team, with senior wrestler Greg Schaefer (teacher prep-all grades) leading his team and junior swimmer David Schulze (anthropology) pacing his squad. Classroom honors are nothing new to Schaefer, who was an Academic All-American last season, or to Schulze, who has earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades in each of the years in which he has been eligible for the award.
Indiana men's basketball was represented by sophomore Mike Roberts (management) and junior Kyle Hornsby (exercise science). Known more for his excellent touch from long range, Hornsby has proven time and again that he can make a name for himself in the classroom as well. The junior compiled a perfect 4.0 GPA while at Anacoco High School in his hometown of Anacoco, La.
Senior point guard Heather Cassady served as the representative from the women's basketball team. Cassady, who was selected as the most valuable player of the 2002 Big Ten Tournament, earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades for the third consecutive season and also took home All-Big Ten recognition on the court for the second straight year, as well.
