IU Varsity Four Earns Berth in Semifinals After Strong Showing

Philadelphia - Indiana women's rowing took one boat to the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, the Varsity 4, and earned a spot in Saturday's semifinal during Friday's preliminary round.
The team of: junior Stephanie Mast, junior Emily Rumschlag, sophomore Margaret Shelsy, junior Emily Patzer and junior coxswain Becky England earned a berth in the semifinals after they won their heat with a time of 7:31.0. The time was just one one-hundredth of a second faster than second place Bowdoin.
IU's time was just four seconds off the day's fastest time of 7:27.0 turned in by Georgia Tech.
"The girls rowed great today," said Head Coach Mark Wilson. "We posted a great time and took control early. Bowdoin did not give up on us, but we finished just ahead of them. It was a great race from the start and we just ended up on top."
The Hoosiers get back into their shell on Saturday when they go into competition with Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Northwestern, Vermont and Seattle.
"All of those crews are strong," said Wilson. "I feel we head into tomorrow's race with the momentum and I think we are going to do well."
The Novice 8 will be in competition next weekend at the Central Region Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
