Senior Erin Quinn Earns Silver Medal at 2002 FINA/USA Diving Grand Prix
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla.-- Indiana diving has shown itself once again at the 2002 FINA/USA Diving Grand Prix in Coral Springs, Fla. on Friday.
Indiana University senior Erin Quinn and 1998 graduate Kimiko Hirai-Soldati earned a silver medal to lead the United States team in the three-meter synchronized springboard competition. Quinn and Soldati were behind the German duo of Heike Fischer and Ditte Kotzian after three dives, but the fourth dive put the US pair into second place to stay. Quinn and Soldati earned a score of 61.20 on their fourth dive while the German pair scored just 59.16 to give Quinn and Soldati a little cushion.
After the fifth and final dive, the U.S. duo finished just 78 hundredths of a point ahead of the German pair outscoring them 270.90 to 270.12 to snatch the silver medal. The Chinese duo of Yu Ting Yang and Minxia Wu earned a score of 284.82 to take the gold.
“Kimiko and Erin are showing that they are great divers,” said Head Coach Dr. Jeff Huber. “Their performance today was great for Indiana diving.”
In the other women’s competition of the day, the three-meter preliminary, Soldati earned a score of 283.05 to give her second after the preliminary round. The finals will take place on Sunday.
Junior Sara Reiling just missed the finals after she finished 14th overall with a score of 223.59. Quinn, a 2002 graduate, finished 18th with a score of 190.17.
Reiling and sophomore Cassandra Cardinell will both be in competition in the finals of the 10-meter platform on Saturday.
The 2002 FINA/USA Diving Grand Prix continues on Saturday with the finals of the men’s three-meter competition and the women’s 10-meter platform competition at the Coral Springs Aquatic Center in Coral Springs, Fla. The event begins at 1 p.m.
