2002-03 Rowing Roster Complete (9-26-02)

Bloomington, IN -In only its fourth year of varsity competition, the rowing team is looking for continued growth. The young women that currently make up the squad are from all around the globe. The geographic diversity allows team members to learn a great deal from each other. However, it is about that time of year to add new members to the team.
The IU coaching staff used a straight forward approach when looking for new recruits for the 2002-03 campaign. For two days the team set up a boat on campus and spoke with people as they walked by, informing them about the program.
The response they got exceeded expectations, as just over 80 girls showed up at the informational meeting. Practices started on Friday, September 13, and for two days the girls were pushed to their limits. They were physically challenged by hard workouts, running medicine balls and body weight activities.
For the past two weeks they have been learning how to row on the ergometers and also on the water. By the end of this process, 60 girls remained.
Head Novice coach Angela Leone was pleased with the effort of all those who came out for the team.
"I am pleased with the number of women that tried out, and I think they did a great job," Leone said. "I think everyone who tried out had a great attitude and work ethic."
Unfortunately not every girl will have the opportunity to be a member of this years squad.
Leone has had a tough task in front of her, having to eliminate some of the girls, but she is very optimistic about those she has selected.
"I am very excited about the group we have selected," said Leone. "It has been very exciting to watch them develop and improve their strokes. So far they have risen to every challenge we have given them. I am excited to see what we can do as a team."
